Jump drives can go bad. If it is not readable in more than one computer, the information on it may be toast.

I would like to retrieve information off my old hitachi model dk23ea-40. What so I purchase to pull the information from my drive to my lap top

I assume this is a PATA (IDE) drive but, even if it is SATA, you can buy quite cheaply a docking station or adapter which enables you to link the drive to a USB port.

This way you can retrieve the data or leave it there and use the drive as an external backup.

Hope this helps,

Retrieve information from a flash drive

I don't know how to recover the files from a broken flash drive. I DO know how to fix one (which would resolve your problem), but that's not really something I can explain (unless you're experienced in computer and component construction).

Your best option would be to check your local listings for companies that can repair your device.

OR, you can look for a data recovery service in your area.

Finally, I do know a web site that can retrieve those files for you:
