Pix 501 Endless reboot - lights flashing continuously

That was the fix !
It seems when using older Cisco devices, a dead / dying CMOS battery is more of a hazard. The battery's meager attempts to provide power repeatedly reboots the motherboard creating frustration and troubleshooting other paths.

CAUTION: Removing the battery isn't a simple affair since it is firmly clipped and a suitable, preferably plastic tool should be used to pry the battery upwards while pressing downwards on the black battery housing. This is similar to removing motherboard batteries but isn't often practiced since most 2502 batteries will outlive the usefulness of their host PC / Cisco PiX firewall.

FAILING to properly anchor the battery housing while removing it with suitable plastic / non conductive tools can permanently damage the sensitive electronics AND result in the entire CMOS battery housing to break off the motherboard.

The PiX will boot without a CMOS battery or even battery housing, but will fail to retain system time if DC power is interrupted.

I have an older Cisco PIX 506 with two VPN connections. One links two offices (PIX-PIX VPN) together, another is for staff to access email & files. The file server on the local LAN the PIX is on are...

It could be a missing route... are the file server and email server on the same subnet? If they are then it is possibly not a routing issue.

Also it would be worth checking the tunneling settings for the VPNs... if you have specifed either only the fileserver subnet or specifically the file server address, then this could be the reason they can get to nothing else.

Hope that this has helped a little :)

Replacing a PIX 515E with an ASA 5510

Best way to migrate is to take the configuration of the old PIX and TFTP it to a PC or other server for safe keeping.

Then boot up the ASA in a lab environment and TFTP the configuration to the new unit and reboot. There will be some commands that don't translate correctly, but you can compare the configurations to each other to make sure all the access lists and NAT statements get transferred across.

Keep in mind that the PIX and the ASA name their interfaces differently, so there may be errors when you transfer the configuration. You can edit the configuration offline with something like Notepad and change the names of the interfaces to have it work.

Good luck!

Site to site VPN between Checkpoint UTM 1 R62 and Cisco pix /Netscreen

I couple of points:

PIX has a few dislikes...

1. Pix does not like class A address, make sure you are using B or C.
2. The VPN subnet always has to be differant to the LAN.
3. Has to have a working DNS server.
4. Add static route, and last resort to main ethernet port that has the DNS & R62. (or 2 if on differant sub)

Hope this helps.
