(01) What operating system is your computer running?I'm not sure of what an operating system is but I think it has Microsoft Wnindows 98, 2nd Edition
(02) Do you hear (or have you recently heard) any unusual noises coming from your laptop? There's none.
(03) Has your laptop been dropped recently? Yes, before it has been dropped, it was still running.
(04) Did any event that you can think of precipitate this issue (installing new software or operating system updates, drivers, software, etc.)? I haven't installed anything recently.
(05) What is the make and model of your laptop? (You can find this information usually on stickers on the bottom of the laptop) Compaq Armada M700
(06) Does your laptop have a CD-ROM drive? yes it does.
(07) Does your laptop have a floppy diskette drive? none.
(08) Do you have the system restore CD(s) for this laptop? I think they were all lost now.
I'll wait for your solutions. Thank you for paying attention to this problem.
Thank you,
Loelle

I have similar problem but mine originated from reseting BIOS to factory defauts. After that it does not see the hard disk. There is no place to select hardisk auto feature in rom configuration. The computer boots with CD-ROM drive. How can I access in HP notebooks/laptops the hardisk setup in bios rom configuration? Can anyone assist?

Hello LoeLLe
There are many issues that can cause your computer to fail to boot up (start). We'll need a bit more information in order to help you to diagnose the problem.
(01) What operating system is your computer running?
(02) Do you hear (or have you recently heard) any unusual noises coming from your laptop?
(03) Has your laptop been dropped recently?
(04) Did any event that you can think of precipitate this issue (installing new software or operating system updates, drivers, software, etc.)?
(05) What is the make and model of your laptop? (You can find this information usually on stickers on the bottom of the laptop)
(06) Does your laptop have a CD-ROM drive?
(07) Does your laptop have a floppy diskette drive?
(08) Do you have the system restore CD(s) for this laptop?
We will need to get more information from you as we trouble-shoot this problem with you. Please, be sure to answer each question that we present you w/ clearly. It is a serious problem, as you know, so, please, be patient as it may take a little while to get it sorted out.
Thank you,
BJ
You're welcome, of course. That's what we're here for.
Thank you for answering each question. You're right. "Microsoft Windows 98 SE (second edition)" is the name of your operating system.
FYI: Some great resources for finding out what different computer and Internet-related terminology mean are:

HERE is a link to some "quick specs" (specifications) for your computer. Please, look closely at the part numbers on the left to see exactly which one is yours. If you can find the serial number for your computer as well (should be on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop), that will help a great deal.
The 1st thing that is needed is to test your hard disk drive. If it has failed then it will need to be replaced b4 you can move forward w/ restoring your operating system.
For that you are going to need a CD-R disc. This disc will be used to "burn" (copy) the hard disk drive diagnostic onto.
We'll get to that in a bit. For now, please, identify your specific computer (by serial number and part number). W/ that information we can determine what hard drive is in the computer so that we can choose the appropriate hard drive diagnostic utility.
Thank you,
BJ

You can find manuals for the computer HERE.
One manual in particular is the MAINTENANCE & SERVICE GUIDE for your computer. You can find it HERE .
================================
Follow the steps outined in section 2.5 beginning on page 2-7 of the SERVICE GUIDE.
Can you get into the Compaq Utilities as directed on page 2-7?
It is possible that you can get into the Compaq Computer Setup even if you cannot get into the Operating System (boot the computer successfully). If you're able to get into the Computer Setup, record the information shown in SYSTEM INFORMATION and post it back here.
Now, go to section 5.5 and follow the instructions there for "Preparing the Computer for Disassembly"
Next, go to section 5.7 and follow the instructions for (temporarily) removing your computer's hard drive. (This is to identify the hard drive manufacturer.)
You're fortunate. The hard drive is very easy to access on this particular laptop model. It requires only a phillips screw driver.
**************************
SOME WORDS OF CAUTION FIRST:
BEFORE you begin, disconnect the power cord and remove the laptop battery.
DO NOT touch any part of the hard drive other than its metal case or housing.
NEVER touch electronic circuitry on any computer component as a static discharge from you can seriously damage the sensitive electronic components.
**************************
If the hard drive is installed in its laptop housing bay w/ the identification sticker up (visible), then you need only record the information on the sticker then re-install the hard drive back into the laptop. (Please, post back here w/ the information you recorded.)
If the hard drive is installed component side up (electronic circuitry exposed), and you cannot see the sticker w/out removing the hard drive from the laptop bezel housing, please, post back here b4 proceeding.
=================================
Let us know how you do. Take your time and be patient with yourself. This is tedious work particularly if you are new at it.

Hopefully by now, the issue w/ your laptop has been resolved.
We can't always repair your problem for you here on FixYa.com but we can, as I did for your problem, provide key information and links to resources that will enable you to pursue a diagnosis or know what steps to take next to get your computer repaired.
Since I did provide you w/ these things, would you mind taking just a moment to re-rate my solution to a "FixYa" rating? I would be most grateful if you would not mind. :)
Thank you kindly!
