I'm thinking of going in for the Brother 5460 CN printer, but I want to know whether it would scan without the cartridges, sorry if this query appears a little dumb!

That's not a dumb question at all. Actually an excellent on, And I would really think you need to go to Brother.com and call customer supprt. My best guess from knowledge of past equipment experience, would be if the cartridges are ampty or out of the machine, It will lock out and not scan.
Simple solution is to just use opaque tape and cover the ink cartridges so that the printer thinks they are full. :)
This has got to be one of the biggest design flaws made on purpose to attack your wallet. This machine will not do anything if it has no ink. I have one at my work and it really tries to be thrown out the window daily. I am so glad it isn't mine. I will never buy any of their products just because of this. It is obviously a ploy to force you to buy more ink that costs way to much money.
I have one of these and it would not scan with out ink. Wish I had asked the question before purchasing :)

same problem./..when i ink runs out nothing works...i have had my brother in to get repaired twice now...replace the ink and it works for a week before it says to replace cartridges..a real pain...will seriously reconsider ever buying a brother product in the future
i hate this freaking machine...it's great when you 1st get it...but once that ink runs out...the problems begin...when u replace the ink it either wont accept it or it it does accept it...it lasts about a week...and with no ink the machine does NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
