Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Freezer/refrigerator compressor running constantly

I think I might have a defrost timer problem the freezer will freeze and than defrost. The compressor never seems to shut off and I searched for a defrost timer but, I only found listed in the parts manual a bi-metal sensor is this how they control and time the defrost on a Whirlpool model ET25DMXVN01? The refrigerator seems cold enough it is just that the freezer keeps freezing things and then defrosting.

Th ebi-metal is a thermostat which shuts the defrost heater on/off, but doesnt actually put the unit into defrost. if it were bad the defrost heater would never go on resulting in massive build up of ice on back wall of freezer, and noticable refrigeration sect. cooling.. dont know how you know the compressor never shuts down, but if that the case perhaps you have a sealed system/ freon issue. try removing the back panel of freezer section and check the evaporator coil. you shuld have an even frost pattern over the entire evap coil. if theres just frost over the top 1or 2 coils, and the rest of coil is shiny aluminum , thats an indication of a sealed system issue.( 5 year part warr by manufacture) def not a do it yourself issue...but that would,, depending on extent of restriction/loss of freon,, cause freezer to freeze and defrost eratically, and the compressor would be running constantly trying to achieve a good stable temp

What I said is that after the defrost board was put on and it was plugged in, the compressor came on and it worked for about a minute and then the defrost board went out. I'm just relaying what the seller of the fridge told me. I was looking into buying it.

No I don't think so. I think you either have a stopped up defrost drain or a bad defrost heater and terminator. Get into the evaporation section and check for ice. If the defrost heater is bad replace the defrost terminator thermostat. Would not be a bad idea to replace the timer or adc (auto defrost control). The fins are coils on the compressor should be clean and the fan motor(if applicable) by the compressor should be running when the compressor is.

Refrigerator will not cool freezer is cold

If the freezer is not getting to the freeze temp, check the defrost timer, and make sure the defrost is not staying on.Under the unit, the condenser, and fan,may need cleaning out.If it is stopped up(condenser, coil)it will not get cooled down by the fan. Then set the freezer adjustment(located in the freezer)about half way.If you do all this, give it about 8 to 12 hours to regulate. If this does not do any good, then the compressor is probably weak,so call the repair man, might need freon charge.Oh,by the way,set the refrigerator to about 7 or 8,this controls the compressor. It tells it when to cut off,and on.Check to see if the compressor is staying on until the refrigerator is cold, and the freezer is freezing. This thermostat control,of course is the one in the fridge compartment.I hope I have covered everything you need to know.If the drain,in the bottom,is constantly dripping,or running water in the drain pan underneath the refrigerator, then the defrost timer maybe staying in one spot.It would have to be replaced.Let us know if this was helpful, thank you.

Freezer compressor running constantly

Below the evaporator fan behind the back cover inside the freezer is the evaporator coils. Remove the back cover in the freezer to observe the frost pattern. Light frost everywhere(NORMAL) or a partial pattern of ice(LOW ON FREON) or nothing(LOW FREON OR COMPRESSOR PROBLEM).

How to check everything
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php
If it's heavy buildup-
If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Freezer not freezing properly

You have a manual defrost freezer . Ice build up of over 1/2" can act like insulation on wires . If you have no frost build up , and runs constantly , then compressor or refrigerant leak is the problem . Advise to replace freezer . Only 2 parts on manual defrost freezer...compressor and cold control . Compressor will not run if bad cold control . If you have a leak , very expensive to have repaired .

Refrigerator is somewhat cold as is the freezer side but the freezer side is not generating freezing temperatures. Same temperature btw the refrigerator & freezer. Model 596.50392001. Any suggestions?

Your refrigerator has a defrost timer located near the floor and behind the kick plate. Remove the kick plate grill and turn the timer slowly clockwise until refrigerator compressor stops running. Leave it there for about 30 minutes or until refrigerator restarts. During this time the refrigerator should be in the defrost cycle. Open the freezer and you will possibly hear a crackling noise or the noise of water sizzling as it drips from the evaporator to the defrost heater. If your refrigerator does not restart after this time then turn the timer again slowly until the compressor restarts. If you do this then the timer will need replaced If no defrost takes place during this time then we need to move to the rear of the freezer and unplug the refrigerator and do some test on the defrost heater. Let me know how this worked out for you. The part number for your defrost timer is 10530703

FREEZER NOT FREEZING AND FRIDGE NOT GETTING COLD

First check to see if your compressor is running at all. If your compressor is at room temperature you cold control is not supplying power to the compressor. Replace the control or locate the defrost timer and rotate the clutch head screw ( Normally black or Grey) and rotate it a small amount clock-wise. If the compressor then starts replace the defrost timer.
