Camera malfunctioning in Creative Zone Modes

When is use any of the Creative Zone Modes on my Canon Rebel XTi - in Program (AE) mode, I can't change the ISO speed or the AF Mode. When I use any of the Creative Zone Modes, the picture is not displayed on the LCD screen. I have to go back to Full Auto in the Basic Zone to see the last pic taken (or any pictures on card). Also, the camera will not power down in the Creative Zone Modes, as it does after 30 sec. in the Basic Zone. At one point, I got a quick flash message "FIL" and the flash was going off once as I went from Program (AE) back to Basic. Help!

It sounds like your firmware has become corrupted.

Visit the Canon Support Site and download the latest firmware (make sure your batteries are fully charged before replacing firmware - if the batteries go flat during the firmware over-write operation your camera will be trashed).

I try to focus and it tells me this function is not selectable in the current shooting mode

Yes there are two zones of selection on the mode dial. one is basic zone (in which you have potrait, landscape, closeup, sports, night portrait & flash off) these are fully automatic modes and the camera does every thing for you you cannot change the focus. you can zoom out and zoom in and when u see in the view finder the picture is blur. then press the shutter button halfway the camera automatically zooms in or out for the correct focal lenght. only in creative zone you can do it. like programe ae , shutter priority , aperture priority , manual exposure. Hope this solves your problem. Prashanth.

More detail see the- "Live View Shooting" chapter in the manual.

disable the mirror lockup (C.fn #8) it happened to me because some guy is some forum said it is how to enable the live view function, and I did it without reading the manual book. now I know that it actually lock the mirror (to prevent shake) at the first press and shoot at the second press.

My canon eos 400d will not autofocus in creative settings.

Hey mate,

I've been having the same problem. It annoyed me during a day out once.

Set the camera in one of the Creative Modes.
-> Then go to Menu (the button on the left of the screen)
-> Setup 2 (thats the furthest menu on the right)
-> Custom Functions (3rd option down)
-> Go to function 4 and change it to "0: AF/AE LOCK"

Hope that helps mate :)

Auto focus does not work in creative modes

That is a custom function of the camera that can be change back to default with ease. While in one of the creative zones press the menu button and navigate to the 5th and final tab on the top right. 8f5da8f.jpg
This is the Setup menu 2. In this menu, select “Custom Functions (C. Fn)” . This will open a submenu of numbered options. Select #04 and set it to 0: the default AF/AE lock on a half depress of the shutter. 7528356.jpg
That should get your camera back to the expected auto focus with the shutter button.

No AF point display indicator in Creative Zone modes.

In creative mode I would imagine that you are required to choose the focus point. Try the arrow buttons.

I have a Canon Rebel XT/EOS 350D. For some reason when I try to view the AF, ISO or WB menus they are not displaying. Can you help?

You need to set your Mode Dial to one of the modes in the creative zone (i.e. one of the modes: P, Tv, Av, M or A-DEP) in order to access the AF, ISO and WB menus. Those menus are not displayed when the Mode Dial is set to one of the Basic Zone modes.
Hope this helps /Chris

Canon eos 400d mode dial does not select modes

Looks like you need to take this to a camera store and have them check it over. I don't know of any setting that would cause what you describe.
