No, to play a game you do not need to have a memory stick inside the PSP. However, you will need one to save you place in a game or download games.

There is also a version of the PSP that has 16 gigs of internal memory.

Backup everything you want from the memory stick onto a computer and reformat the memory stick from the psp.

Hi 90%of these are tarnished pins on the memory card, get a hard bristle tooth brush and scrub the mem card pins length ways then turn the psp on goto game tab and then slowly push the memcard in and out a few times untill you see the mem icon come up failing this there is a serious problem in the mem slot or the memory card Good luck

Sounds like there is a problem with the memory card. Try copying over the files to the hard drive.

If you can then at that point, copy one of your saved games to the memory card. Try loading it from the game. If you can load it then you know you had to much junk on the card, if you can't then that means your information is corrupted and I would suggest getting another memory card for your psp cause that means your original memory card has bad clusters on it.

If you are still using sony's firmware then you will not be able to play games from yuour memory card. If you are not using sony's firmware and it is hacked then actual PSP games have to go in the ISO folder not the game folder. when you open your memory card on your computer it should be inside of the PSP folder. BUT... this folder will only be present and work if your PSP is hacked and you reformat the memory stick.

If your memory stick is new, you may have to format it before your psp can use it.Go to the options menu and look around, and you should find one that says something like "Format Memory Stick". But be careful, because formatting erases whatever is on the stick.

If you have custom firmware installed you can download umd dumper: http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/38.Just put the umddump and the umddump% in PSP,GAME and then put the umd you want to copy on your psp and on your psp go to game, memory stick and click x on umd dumper.Then when its done coping go to game, memory stick and there should be the game of the umd and you dont have to had the umd to play the game.
