Sticky keys I spilled some liquid on the keyboard of my Gateway NX860S (=MX8711 or so I'm told) some months ago. Some keys remain sticky. Gateway tech support says the only fix is to send it to them to replace the keyboard -- for a few hundred $$. Is there a cheaper fix?

Dear rwertheim

Try the following guide

http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2007/03/20/key-fell-off-keyboard/

There are no guides from Gateway for the keys available for the but this guide will be more than enough to help you through this one in order to remove them. Its should be completely the same principle.

Cleaning the keys should be done without alchohol based cleaners because the lettering might be erased. Use some soap and warm water instead and gently scrab with a soft brush the bottom of the keys.

Please remember to take out your laptop battery/ac adaptor in any case since you will be working at hardware level with your equipment.

Regards, and I wish you no more sticky keys!

Please dont forget to rate this solutin!

My laptop is entering more than one character at a time when typing in my password for example its adding additional letters how can i turn this off

seems like something is ring with the keyboard, try an external keyboard, if the issue is still the same this will be a windows issue, once in windows tap on the shift key 5 times this will either deactivate sticky keys or ask you to activate sticky keys.
If it is not a sticky key setting issue then the problem most likely will be Hardware, did any liquid spill on your keyboard previously causing the key to malfunction causing the key to type extra characters?
If none then possible this is a faulty keyboard on the machine.

Thats just it they dont work......i cleaned a sticky / ? key, now these keys wont work

It is near impossible to clean sticky keys, especially when you have spill sticky liquid on the keyboard.
The best solution is to replace the keyboard.
You can get a replacement keyboard from one of these WEB sites.

What is the best way to prevent spillage from messing up the keyboard

It depends on what kind of spillage. Unless you can find some cover to put over the keyboard, the simplest solution is to keep ALL LIQUIDS as far away from the computer as you can manage.
however, depending on the type of liquid, you can in most cases, if your fast enough, you can wipe off the spill, or disconnect the keyboard and pop the keys off to clean underneath. (keeping sure not to touch the circuit board underneath). Most desktop keyboards allow you to do this quite easily (just make sure to do them one by one- the last thing you need, is to forget where each key is supposed to go, and put for example the "K" key where the "G" key is supposed to be. ) a quick response is especially needed for spillages with sticky liquids, such as Orange Juice or Coke/Pepsi (a computer service tech's worst nightmare) or liquids that will dry with a thick stain, such as coffee/milk products. If the problem is just water however- leave it out to dry for a few days in a really warm, dry place. The board should work with no problems afterwards.
Hope this helps!

Laptop Gateway mx8711

Gateway laptop is really ****.
I bought Gateway MX8711 in March 2007, after 6 months i use it...the hard disk failed.
Gateway replaced a new Hitachi hard disk for me but not more than 8 months and it failed again.
Gateway told me that i have no more warranty because the repair warranty is only 90 days.
I bought this laptop and use it not more than 2 years, the hard disk was failed twice.
Usually Hard disk manufacturer provided 3 years warranty for the hard disk. The manufacturer year of the hard disk is May 2007....they should able to help because the har disk not more than a year being used...but they don't. This is really bad customer service and not fair to the buyer.
I will not buy any Gateway products anymore....i swear.
