Question about Maytag PAV3240A Top Load Washer

Will not spin

I think I need to get into the brake to see if it is stopping the spin. I am afraid to open it up because there is a caution sticker that says there is 200 lbs of force inside. Shall I leave it alone? I do like to fix it myself.

You really don't want to go in there... the warning is just for such occasions. You can really cause some self-harm by releasing the energy stored within that system, not to mention that you'd never get it back together the way it's supposed to be.

I caution you to read and heed the warning!

Hoover 500M0AUS stops very frequently due to off-balance

Hi there.I'm guessing you changed the (Spin Brake Solenoid) underneath,it attaches to the brake arm,the solenoid retracts with a normal loud clunk & pulls the brake arm away..I think what is happening is the clutch spring inside that white plastic cog is not binding like it's supposed to & it's not taking the drum with it.so the agitator is spinning independantly without the drum.the clutch spring tightens in one direction for spin & loosens in the other direction for wash.either way i think your problem is in that plastic cog & clutch spring, the spring is inside that cog & hard to see.it can be repaired if your up to pulling the entire gearbox out to get to it.I hope this was helpful,it's kind of hard to explain by this method.cheers Chris

Your transmission is still good that is why it still agitating and spinning. The culprit is the pulley. The transmission pulley is a part of spinning mechanism including the clutch, and the brake. The clutch and the brake are hardly needing replacement, but the pulley. Good luck.

Stops spinning during the spin cycle sometimes. I can open the lid, move the tub a little, close the lid, and sometimes it will restart. Recently, if it stops and I try to move the tub, it feels like its...

well the tub is not supposed to move cause it has brakes on the bottom of tub, that means your brakes are fine, could be a problem in your clutch area, mine sheared off the bottom of the basket drive tube which broke the 2 little fingers on the clutch arm falling off the tube (thus no spin) also check your motor coupling which is between the motor and tranny, also your lid switch could be bad

Washing machine, clothes come out very wet, as an incomplete spin cycle. I think the brake is out.

You can tell if the brake is out when you open the machine lid while it is in spin cycle,,, if it does not stop spinning quickly, then the brake is not working. but if it stops fast,, the brake is operating correctly.
I'm more apt to think this is a direct drive machine.
If you stand there and watch and listen,,, it should go from the aggitate cycle into the drain water cycle without any spin,,,this will last about 1 minute. Then it should kick into spin cycle once the tub is empty.
These machines are prone to wear after time that causes it to "shift" incorrectly,,, thus spinning when it should be only draining (kinda skipping the drain cycle of sorts)
You can visually check this by opening the door after the drain cycle starts to see if the tub is actually spinning inside. if it is,,, then the transmission is damaged and repair can become expensive.
I have taken the transmission out of an old machine and swaped to repair (if you have another good transmission that is)
You may want to look at the plastic and rubber coupling between the motor and transmission to insure it is in good shape if you find the transmission is shifting correctly as explained.

Washer won't spin. Belt is slipping. Tub is stuck.

The belt sounds worn out since its slipping. Change it out. Its cheap fix.

The drum brake does just what is sounds like. brakes the drum. For instance when u open the lid during a cycle and everything stops thats the drum engaging and stops the movement of teh drum. If the brake is malfunctioning two things will happen, you open the lid (assuming the safety switch is still good) or the drum will not spin at all.

My washer will not work in the spin and rinse cycle.

Whats happened is that the clutch/brake assembly is stuck.Without a qualified service tech. you can really get taken if the repairman doesn't know the trick to this.I can walk you through this step by step and you need only a 5/16 nut driver or socket.

Wont spin out

I had a similar problem, but the precursor to this was a loud squeal when the machine came to a stop at the end of spin cycle. This squeal lasted for a couple of months (since I was afraid to take it apart). The one day there was a leak during the drain cycle, so I looked behind it and found the flex hose that goes between the drum and the pump. I replaced the hose after about a week, and when I tried to use the washer, it did not spin anymore. So I turned the washer upside down, pulled the drum out, and found a big 'caution' tag on the plate, but don't be worried. Out of the 6 screws that hold the plate on, I took out three opposing ones and bought 3 of the same pitch but only that they are 2" long. Then I put a nut on each one, and put them into three opposing holes in the plate. Run the 3 nuts down to the plate, then take the three remaining short screws out. Slowly back off the three nuts equally, and within 1.5" the plate is safely off. Then I lifted the spring out along with the brake drum. The drum had rusted itself in place. This was because of the water hose leak. So I sanded the brake drum lining lightly to remove the glaze, and sanded the place where it was rusted to. Then I put it all back together, and it works like new!

Whirlpool washer not spinning

Between the pump out and spin cycle is a very brief pause you have to listen to it to catch it. when this happens the clutch engages and releases the brakes and then the washer spins. I believe you have a problem with this brake clutch assembly.

In my Opinion This not a do it yourself project,

Now you have replaced the timer so you have money already invested in a used washer, the question to you is do you have it repaired? or is it time to spend your $$ and buy a new washing machine? has the machine been repaired before? How old is the washer? how much laundry do you do a week?

Call several repair shops and tell them you think you need a clutch assembly and ask for an estimates before they come out.

This problem is normally attributed to a combination of two things: A worn out snubber ring, and a worn brake assembly.

The snubber ring assembly is a white teflon ring that sits under the wash tub at the base (called the milk stool, because it looks like an upside down milk stool).  The entire wash tub assembly will rest on the snubber as it helps get rid of vibration while the tub agitates and spins.  When the snubber starts to wear down, you will notice an increase in tub vibration during the spin cycle and it will sometimes begin to squeak. NOTE: YOU CANNOT OIL THE SNUBBER! DOING SO CAN CAUSE MORE DAMAGE.

The brake assembly is mounted between the pulley wheel and transmission under the washer.  As the brake assembly ages, the pad (which is mounted along the rim of a metal disc) begins to glaze over.  As it glazes, it will also squeak and cause the sudden "slamming" to a stop.  The glazing, coupled with humidity in the air can make this condition worse.

Both problems occur normally with this model washer and can be attributed to normal wear and tear.  I recommend replacing the brake assembly and snubber at the same time.  You will need, however, a special Maytag brake removal tool and spring removal tool if you decide to attempt this repair yourself (it is possible to accomplish this without the aid of a repairman).  Let me know if you need further assistance.  CAUTION: THERE IS A 200 LB COMPRESSED SPRING UNDER THE BRAKE HOUSING.  ATTEMPTING TO REMOVE THE COVER WITHOUT THE BRAKE REMOVAL TOOL CAN BE DANGEROUS.
