Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

1 Answer

Help I am currently connected to the internet with the wires but I'm trying to be able to make the laptop wireless. I have the Linksys modem/router but can not take the wires out to make wireless. I know this is probably not the right language in computer world but that is close as I can describe my problem.

Does your Laptop have a Wireless card which would enable you to access a wireless internet connection (if your unsure look for a WiFi logo on your laptop or go into the control panel then click on "network connections" and when your in here do you see "Wireless Network Connection" ? )

secondly can your modem / router supply a wireless signal ? a big hint for this , does your modem / router have an Ariel on it?

your modem / router is the device which you plug your cables into :) thanks

If it is the Linksys Wireless G WRT54G, then go to this link there is simple instructions on how to setup wireless network.

But, first verify you do have a Wireless card in your laptop. by, hitting Start, Run, then type in CMD in the run box.

When the MSdos(Black window) opens type in IPCONFIG/ALL

this should show all the Network adapters on your machine including your Ethernet and any wireless if avail.

It is usually listed below your LAN/Ethernet settings. It may say something like Intel Pro/100 or 1000 Mobile connection under description. If you dont see a wireless adapter. then go out and buy a Wireless card or a USB wi-fi dongle.

I'm unsure of the exact part number here but using the model number I checked the manual. This looks like it's just an access point which extends a current network you have. If you only have your laptop, this device and your internet modem it may not give you the wireless connectivity you're looking for. On a normal setup you would plug your modem into a router, plug your laptop into the router and set it up with all your DSL/Cable connection information as well as wireless on/off. You can then unplug from the router and continue life. with this one it's only connecting to an existing setup (another router or another wireless network) and extending it.
If you are looking for a solution to give you a router that connects to your modem and gives you wireless or adding multiple devices on a single connection I would recommend returning this and getting an all-in-one router such as this: http://homestore.cisco.com/en-us/Routers/Linksys-E1000-Wirelessn-router_stcVVproductId97826160VVcatId551966VVviewprod.htm?icid=linksys-specs-e1000-learnmore-btn&src2=linksys-specs-e1000-learnmore-btn

I have a linksys WRT54G, and I'm trying to hook up a wi-fi connection. As of now, my internet is Internet Explorer, and my current modem is a motorola SB5101. The Motorola modem is hooked up directly to...

Hello
Try this

1 disconnect all wires, including power from the modem and router.
2 Find reset button on router usually in the back, need a pen tip or paper clip to hold it in.
3 Hold in reset for 1 min.
4 Reconnect modem first,power up.
5 Reconnect router second, power up.

Try changing the ethernet wire from the modem to the router.

So your going to have your cable coax wire to the modem. Then a ethernet wire from the modem to the router, then a ethernet wire from the router to the computer.

Sounds like you may have one wire in the wrong place.

I have a linksys wireless g router that worked fine until yesterday. Now it won't connect to the internet. I have a desktop wired to the router and a laptop used wireless.

Check if you can connect to the internet when hooked directly to the modem. If your connection works fine through the modem, then your router needs to be reconfigured.

Not connecting to internet

You will need to reset your modem or have your internet service reset. When you have a PC connected directly to the modem the modem locks on to the NIC MAC address and will not assigin a pubilc IP address to the Linksys router until the modem is reset. I hope this helps.

As last resort you might want to use a JTAG cable and debricking programming software. If your router is brikced or you want to change the firmware this cable can do it. The cable will connect to your parallel port and your wireless router so you can repair your router. They are about $5.95.

Have SBCglobal with 2wire but want N wireless capability

Follow the dots -

2 wire DSL wire to back of DSL modem.

Ethernet cable out of DSL modem, to current router (if you have one).

Ethernet cable out of current router (if you have one) to new Wireless N router.

If you currently have a wireless G router, keep it, or, use the new Wireless G/N router alone. You will need to set up all security settings again if you remove your current router, and if the new router is N only, you will need to make sure all your wireless connecting computers have wireless N cards in them.

Setting Up a Wireless Network

You can still use your existing Linksys router with your cable modem. In fact the router your have is designed to work with DSL/Cable Broadband connections.

1. Make sure to properly connec the devices in your network. Modem will be connected to the Internet port of the router. Then, laptop will be connected to one of the 4 Ethernet ports of the router. For initial setup of your router with modem, you need to hardwire laptop to the router.
2. Press and hold reset at the back of the router for about 15 seconds.
3. After 15 seconds turn off the router and then turn off the modem. Wait for a minute.
4. Power on modem and wait for the lights to be ready.
5. When modem lights are on, turn on router.
6. There should be 4 lights on. Power should be steady green. Internet, WLAN and Ethernet port.
7. Checked if you have Internet connectivity on your laptop while it is wired to the router.
8. If Internet is working, disconnect laptop from wired connection to the router and check available wireless network that laptop can detect.
9. The default wireless network name that the Linksys router broadcasts is "linksys". Connect to it which is an unsecured wireless network.
10. Once you are successfully connected, check Internet.

Hope this helps!

Wireless internet connection

I may be able to help with this...but I need a detailed description of how you have things connected between the XP desktop, the cable, modem, the Linksys router, and the laptop. Also, is the Linksys router new?

Typically, the wan port on the wireless router connects directly to the cable modem with a cat5 network cable....then the desktop pc connects to the router...on port 1 for example...with a similar cable. Once the wireless router is set up properly, the laptop should then be able to connect using wireless.
