With great difficulty , i dont have a step by step guide , but i did the same thing , if you do do this you wont have the external shell anymore i ended up breaking mine to bits , so i suggest dont do this if u still want a external shell.

How to open: get a flat head screw driver and try to pop it open with brute strength careful you don't touch the HDD enclosed inside and to keep the wiring intact. there will be hidden screws inside the case which i ripped off.

Sorry i cant be of further help and Goodluck! :)

Can't read HD-- I/O error

"Joecolvette" has probably got it right, I've seen this before. The HDD enclosure circuit board has a fault. Can be resolved by replacing the enclosure. Plenty on ebay, just ensure you buy one with the correct HDD interface (Sata or IDE).

Alternatively, if you have a tower with a spare port, you could take the HDD out of the caddy, install it in the tower as a "Slave" (check jumper settings) ensuring the system drive is set to "Master". Then you can check whether the HDD itself is at fault.

MY MAXTOR ONE TOUCH 3 EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE WILL NOT BE RECOGNIZED BY THE COMPUTER AND MAKES A BEEPING NOISE. ANY SUGGESTIONS WHAT IS WRONG? CHEAPEST SOLUTIONS?

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

I installed from original CD and my computer running Vista does not find maxtor ll external HD. Is it compatable with Vista? why does it not find the drive?

Start "Device Manager".
Make sure that the USB devices are "ready" and "enabled".
Then, connect the external USB device.

Can you try the Maxtor external device in some *OTHER* notebook?
If it does not work, then the Maxtor device has a problem.

My Onetouch4 Maxtor external experienced a hit and afterward it sounds a repeatitive beep when pluged into the electricity? wht should i do? tnx in advance

Hello,

If you're lucky the damage is only in the enclosure circuitry, take the drive to your local PC shop and ask the techs to test the HDD inside in a new enclosure. If it works you can simply buy the new enclosure and be on your way. If it fails the failure is in the HDD itself and you will require the help of a pro. If you need a pro, reply with your location(Country, State and City) and I can direct you to a nearby facility that will be able to assist you with data recovery.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

Drive won't mount

i had a maxtor one touch go bad and had to open the case and take it out of the external casing and put it into my computer as an internal drive. then it worked fine. it was a single drive.

just today i had a maxtor TB drive go bad, and since i think it has two drives inside it i am very worried that i will not be able to do the same thing.

POWER UP THE DRIVE AND THE DATA LIGHT BLINKS FAST CONSTANTLY

you could try to remove the drive and install it on a "USB hard drive enclosure" ( not to expensive) to see if you can get the data

it's possible your current enclosure is bad and not the drive

thanks for rating

Dropped my external HDD while on.

all i can say is be gratefull that after dropping it you could get access to the data.. only suggestion is to backup all data from it immediately and replace it as it may fail and at that point your looking at a bill of £300 per hour for professional data recovery. It isn't possible for your to open your drive or do anything to locat or resolve any noises as they have to be kept airtight. a single spec of dust can damage the surface of the disk and the read / read heads..

BURNED CKT

If it is the USB adapter that is part of the enclosure, (not the disk itself) you can transfer the HDD that is inside this enclosure into a generic external HDD enclosure. either that or you can use an external HDD adapter to access the data on a disk (like Magic Bridge), this is and adapter without the enclosure, and is fairly handy if you need to get data from HDD in this way.. or to Clone disks
