Hello, It's possibly lens calibration problem, sometimes that happens when there's a lot of sudden movements during transportation, sometimes the use of scratched disks tend to trigger the Error correction algorithm of the PS3 reader, putting the reading lens into a lot of stress that heats up the EC chip and games are not read properly, causing the game to fail loading and making unusual sounds.
I recommend not to use scratched disks, try to use only PS3 game disks only to extend your console's life, and take good care of all your disks, keep them clean.
The thing is as technology improves Disks format changes to put more information into a single disk, and precision looking for data is more critical as data sectors are closer to each other, so scratched or dirty media tends to return errors.
Hope I helped, and try to seek some professional help on calibrating/substituting your old reader.

My PS3 doesn't read disks that i insert!

It needs a new laser because the old one is "burnt out". It's a really common problem with them.

You could replace the laser or the entire Bluray drive.

I buy my parts at http://parts.consolerepairguy.com - the laser are about $75 each and Bluray drives are about $95.

In your caseme, best bet might be to get the whole drive.

I run a repair business and that place has best prices aside from Hong Kong which I don't trust.

I have taken a Seagate 5400.2 60GB hard disk out of a broken Sony PS3 and put it into a case to use as an external drive for my Dell laptop running Vista. The computer recognises thst the device is presnt...

You will have to "destroy" the data that is on the disk... If that is ok then:

1. Right-click "My Computer" and select "Manage" from the drop-down menu.
2. Select "Disk Management"
3. A graph of the disks in the computer will appear.
4. Go to "Full Screen" (maximize your window).
5. Find the Seagate disk (may be marked "Unknown").
6. If you are absolutely sure that this is the Seagate out of the Sony PS3 .. .then right-click on the graph that represents the Seagate and "Delete Partition" (The system will not allow you to delete your boot drive partition.
7. Once it has been deleted, you can "Create Partition" (choose "Primary" partition) and do not use a fast (quick) format.
8. You probably know the rest.... (Create drive, FAT32, etc.)

Hope this is what you want...

Try updating the firmware. If it doesn't work, then take it to a repair shop, there's nothing you can do.

Ps3 disk reading error

Can you be any more specific? is this a problem with one disk, one type of disk or all disks? What is the exact error you are getting? Are you trying to play a game, play a film, play an audio CD or are you using your PS3 as a Linux computer and trying to open a data disk? have you tried more than one disk? Without specifics there's just no way to guess what the problem is.
