CD/DVD drive isn't recognized / cannot load driver

Hi, I have a Toshiba Satellite A75-S211, and my computer doesn't recognize the CD/DVD rom drive. I went into the device manager, and tried to reinstall the driver, but doesn't seem to work. Under device manager it says that Windows cannot load the device driver, and I get a (Code 39) error. I went to the Toshiba website and downloaded "qe15advdramx", but that didn't seem to work either. I also tried Windows update, but haven't had any luck with that either. Any help will be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi, the error code that you have on the CD/DVD drive is a known issue from Microsoft. The error code means "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (code 39)".
Since you are using a Toshiba laptop; you can click on this link http://tinyurl.com/toshibadvd and click on the repair tool on the resolution. This is applicable on both Windows Xp and Vista and will delete the upper/lowerfilters on the registry.

In case that the error code still exist you need to manually delete the upper/lowerfilters under the registry by clicking on this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461/en-us . You need to go the "Run" screen then type in "regedit" and click OK or hit the enter key.

This will surely fix the error code that you have on the CD/DVD drive.

Thanks

What is your operating system? have you upgraded yo a higher version? if you did then you must have installed a driver thatis not designed to work withy our OS now.

Ok.. now i seem to get an idea of what you are saying. Your PC wont recognize you CD/DVD right? You know Win XP itself will load standard drivers for your drive, you dont even have to download and install. what i see here is a hardware failure. if it was working before and now you have that kind of problem. Can you try to use the drive with another set and see if it will work? or can you find another CD/DVD drive that you can try in your unit. i dont think though that it is your main board because it can detect your hardisk and it boots normal. you will have this kind or trouble if your IDE controller is defective. but as i said your hardisk boots so the controller is fine, i think it is just the DVD drive. can you see if you can try replacing, just to test only.

i forgot, check the connection of your DVD/CD drive it may be loose too, it is a slot/slide type so see maybe you can pull in and out for few times then try again to boot the system

Having done all of that, if the drive D is not there, replace the drive as it is likely to be faulty.

Tip

Upgrade CD/DVD ROM to CD-RW/DVD ROM

I just replaced my original CD/DVD ROM with a Toshiba SD-R2512 CD-RW/DVD ROM in my 1805-S253 running Windows ME. I used "Roxio Easy CD Creator" for writing to CD's. Everything was "plug'n'play" except the bezel that came with the new drive had to be swapped out. Windows ME recognized the new drive immediately and I didn't have to load any new drivers. This upgrade will probably work on other 1800 or 1805 Satellite series machines.

My DVD/CD-RW drive isn't recognized/ doesn't play disks.

It may be bad. Has the laptop been damaged? Dropped? Open Device Manager, DVD/CD Rom drives, is it listed? In Start Menu, Computer, Is it listed? Try re installing the DVD rom driver, the MS Vista 32bit drivers can be found here: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/Product/vostro-a860

I have this on my screen on boot PXE -E61 MEDIA TEST FAILURE CHECK CABLE PXE- MOF EXITING PXE ROM WHAT CABLE DO I NEED TO CHECK?

The hard drive may just need reseating to make it work, failing that the hard drive is either faulty or the had disk controller is faulty.
To test the hard drive, remove it and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and then plug it into a working computer's USB port, if you see this drive as a external drive and can see the contents of the hard drive the it is OK.
If the hard drive isn't recogonized then the hard drive is faulty and you need to get a new hard drive for your laptop and install Windows, the drivers and your programs etc.
