IF BY LIVE ON BOTH SIDES YOU MEAN THERE IS VOLTAGE PRESENT ON BOTH TERMINALS, THERE MUST BE 240 VOLTS PRESENT BETWEEN THE TWO HEATER TERMINALS. IF NOT, CHECK YOUR FUSE BOX FIRST.
IF YOU HAVE 240 VOLTS AT THE HEATER TERMINALS, BUT NO HEAT, THE HEATER IS BAD.

I have a samsung dryer dv218ae it runs but no heat can you help me

Your heater elements may be bad and need replacement. Is it an electric dryer? If so electric dryers run a dual breaker, this means 120 volts on one side of the breaker runs the motor, the other side of the breakers runs the heater coils. Its possible the heater side of the breaker has tripped. Try turning off the breaker for 20 seconds or so then reset. 220 volt breakers can trip on one side and not the other.

Check the supply fuses first . There is a non- resettable thermal fuse but the dryer will not start if it is gone. There is also a non -resettable thermostat on the upper side of the heater housing.

Hi. My sister's dryer won't heat. I have taken the

Facing the parts from the rear, the heater is on the right hand side.
It can be removed from the bottom of the cylinder.
There is a thermal fuse on the top left side of the heater canister. Remove the wires from it and use a volt meter set for ohms. Test the fuse. No reading is a bad fuse. It comes in a kit with the high limit thermostat located on the base of the heater. They must be replaced at the same time. If the fuse is good, use the volt/ohm meter to test the heating element. No reading is a bad element.

How do you replace the thermal fuse?

The kenmore fuse mounts on the dryer blower housing. On a gas model this fuse when blown will allow the dryer to run however on an electric model this fuse will kill the dryer. The maytag fuse mounts on the right hand side of the heater. Note: the 2 fuses that come in the kit are rated for gas or electric dryers. When this fuse blows the dryer will be dead. The GE fuse mounts in the rear on the heater element pan. When this fuse blows the dryer will continue to run but their will be no heat. Dryer duct fuses are used on various brands of dryers as a back up they usually come in pairs with one mounted on the heater and another near the blower. The kenmore hi limit will kill the heater element but not kill the machine, it mounts on top of the heater housing. The bottom limit comes with it, always replace them both when repairing the dryer.

How do you test the voltage for a dryer? Bought a testing meter to test the continuity of (250 or 120...) just don't know how to go about it.

You cannot test continuity with this unless you have a death wish. You could see if you had power going to an object but that would not let ye know if power was going through it. Both sides of the heating element could be hot and therefore light up the tester but that would not PROVE the heater was ok. To do that you would need to remove a wire (while live) connect up to the live 240 volt wire and the leg to the heater THEN if the light comes on yeah you have continuity but you could be KILLed in the process. It would be better to get a meter and check each item for continuity:

Dryer not drying

Locate the heater element ,disconnect one or both ends. ohm it out with an ohm meter. Zero reading means tha it is open and needs to be replaced. Maxium or full; scale reading on the right side means that it is shorted and needs to be replaced. Middle reading on the meter and I would look elsewhere, such as;  Voltage coming to the element if you are used to dealing with 220 volts, live.

Dryer will not get hot dryer will come on and run but it will not get hot what cvould be the problem

CHECK FOR 240VOLTS AT THE OUTLET. THE DRYER WILL RUN WITH ONLY ONE SIDE OF THE 240VOLT CIRCUIT BUT THE DRYER WON'T HEAT.
IF YOU OWN A METER AND KNOW HOW TO USE IT, TAKE THE BACK PANEL OFF OF THE DRYER AND FIND THE HEATER ON THE RIGHT SIDE FACING THE BACK OF THE DRYER(WHIRLPOOL AND KENMORE DRYERS).
CHECK FOR 240 VOLTS AT THE TWO TERMINALS OF THE HEATER. IT WILL BE THE TWO TERMINALS LOWEST TO THE GROUND AND HAS TWO RED WIRES ATTACHED TO THEM. IF NO 240VOLTS, BACK TRACK THROUGH THE CIRCUIT AND CHECK EACH ITEM YOU COME TO. IF YOU FIND 240VOLTS, THAT IS THE BAD PART.

FOR MAYTAG PRODUCTS, REMOVE TWO SCREWS FROM THE BOTTOM FRONT OF THE DRYER AND SWING THE BOTTOM OUT UNTIL THE CLIPS DISENGAGE FROM THE TOP. SET IT ASIDE. THE HEATER IS LOCATED IN A TUBE AT THE BOTTOM RIGHT OF THE INSIDE. CHECK IT THE SAME WAY.

most common problem with the dryers is blown thermal fuses, something gets too hot and for safety reasons the thermal fuse blows. You can also check your incoming power supply make sure the breakers havent tripped. part num( LA-1053 )about $30 comes with directions to install. its located under main top towards the rear of unit moundted to the side of heater.BE SURE TO TURN OFF ALL POWER BEFORE CHECKING ITS LIVE!!!!!!!!!

Dryer is on and tumbling, but not heating up

Its very hard testing without a test meter.. volts and ohms. The Casing & heater is on the right side facing the back of the dryer. Metal silver in color, the heater is inside of the caseing. You can take the heater out and look for broken coils on the heater to see if it needs replacing. You have a to lift the top up to get at the top screw of the heater casing, take the 2 screws out of the flap where the lint filter goes. Use a putty knife to push the clips in on the front of the dryer and look to the back on the left side to remove the top screw of the casing. check the heater a post results.. theres many more things to check if the heater is good.
