Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a friend that had a hard drive failure and they bought a new hard drive, they asked me if i would help them to get it back to a operational state. i took thier computer to my house to restore the hard drive with the restore disks that came with thier computer and when i get to the point to use the restore cd roms it says this must be a gateway computer. So i'm somewhat confused as to what to do since it is a gateway and its the disks that came with it why is it doing this. long story short, i formated the hard drive and fdisk it like i have done on other computers. PLEASE HELP ME BECAUSE I DON'T WANT TO LOOK TOTALLY STUPID.

To ekse, and the fixya, thanks for the input. i didn't think i had to wipe the hard disk to all zeros, since its a new hard, however i'll try it. i have aprogram that wipes the hard drive, its called lysol.

i wiped the new drive and then i fdisked then partioned it then formated it. i did'nt know anyone would anwser me. its nice to have nice people, "in the know to help each other". i'm still bummed out because it still tells me i need a gateway computer

when using the restore disk. i don't know but my friend said if they could just get thier windows me back they could start all over, and that would do for them. i offered win 98 but they don't like anything except "win me." personally i like win 98 or win xp.

    thanks for your asist. mikey23r

Give it to me within 20 minutes to get a ansver today, Im going to bed soon.

  • Ekse Apr 01, 2008

actually im going to bed right now.

I found something else for you

    http://support.gateway.com/support/drive...

check and scan the harddisk with this utility^

  • Ekse Apr 02, 2008

Oh I see, so you changed the harddrive. Thats the thing the setup cd most likely looked up some information from the harddrive and wont install.

Its a copy protection system so people dont install the gateway software on other computers.

Basicly if the computer has a license code on it, xp home xp pro

Then you can go and download a illegal copy, becouse you already have a lisence. and that lisence is what makes your operateing system geniue.

So Id suggest you get a cd xp i supose, then all the drivers for the pc, from the gateway site, and so on what programs came with the gateway

one place to get a copy of a xp cd is www torrentz dot com look for windows xp. you could order one from microsoft but they probably wouldnt send it.

Oh by the way, Im trying to get my rateing to 85% or more, could you give me a fixya rateing now that you know exactly how to fix the pc?

Thanks, If you need more asistance, let me know. Good luck.

Do Lenovo laptops kill non-Lenovo hard drives?

Yes, I had the same ...
To put things right I downloaded Linux Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/download), burnt it to dvd and used the non-working hard drive as the only master drive, and installed Ubuntu as the operating system. Then I erased Ubuntu by installing Windows XP.

As you already have Windows working on your computer, why not create a 'virtualbox' and install the tech preview inside your current operating system? Search for for Oracle virtual box for Windows hosts (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/virtualbox/downloads/index.html), download it and also download the guest box additions.

That just means if you have say, Windows 7 as your operating system, you create a virtualbox and install another operating system inside that virtualbox. You can run both operating systems at the same time.

If you don't fancy the idea of a virtualbox, you can use the inbuilt Windows disk partitioner to create another drive on your hard drive and install the tech preview there. Your computer will be 'dual boot' ... at start up you choose which operating system to use.

You can do the same using Linux - but be aware that Linux must go on as the SECOND operating system.

Your first port of call is to format those hard drives and put things right.

1.finding top quality external hard drive with extremely user friendly software when there are so many to choose from--which one? pc is making wierd grinding noises from the right side of the keyboard

This weird noise is a symptom of physical hard drive failure. So, if you really want to save your data immediately consult a data recovery specialist.

Hard disk failure

Check if your hard drive is still in warranty period so you could ask for replacement from the manufacturer. Otherwise, simply buy a new hard drive and move all your data from the old one to the new drive.

SMART always predicts correct hard drive status and probably this time, you need to change it ASAP.

Hope it helps!!

You have given little information, but to me it sounds like your hard disk is failing. I would try to get the drive imaged to another one, and replace the drive before you completely lose all your data!

Hi:
Your hard drive is in dire trouble, and often you can still recover files from it sometimes. One suggestion is to buy a new hard drive, install your operating system on the new drive, and get your computer up and running, then install your old hard drive as a secondary slave hard drive and see if you can copy your files to your new hard drive.

Hi there ...

I am going to help you ... don't get mad ... read to the end ... then decide. Deal?

You don't have any idea what you are doing do you?

You bought a new hard drive - took out the old one - inserted the new one and are now wondering why it will not work.

My friend, there is lots more to this than you know.

First off - you don't need to be in the BIOS. You don't need to know about CMOS nor POST. Somethnig you MUST be familiar with before you touch another screw is you MUST follow static electricity precautions. Failure to do this WILL result in the death of your computer!!!!!!!!!!

The BIOS does not "read" the drive... the function of the BIOS is to take attendance and let the class know who is present and where they are seated (if I may use that metiphore). Once attendance is taken and everyone is in place, BIOS performs a POST and following POST, Win.exe takes over, thanking BIOS for its work. Then Win.exe loads the OS into memory (not BIOS)

Who said you could run a 120 gig hard drive? That is a long way from your old 40. It may work it may not work in your computer. You may have to partician the physical device into two virtual devices. And you probably don't have any idea what I'm talking about. I would love to teach you but this is not the place and, according to the website rules, it is impossible for us to do that somewhere else (violates the user agreement of the site).

You need your new hard drive formatted. The software you got with your new drive should do that ... but that CD or DVD is not an operating system.

What you need is a fresh install of an operating system. If you don't want to purchase Windows or Mac or some other system, you could get Lunix, a free open source operating system, but based on where you are, I suggest you stay with a mainline OS.

I think you should consider having an operating system installed at the Big Box store or at a computer shop in your area. If at a computer shop, ask the store if it is permissable to watch. The smaller the store, the more likely they are to say OK.

Good luck with your project.

I hope this information has helped you.

Positive comments welcome.

HARD DISC

If you bought it new then back up any files and take it back to the shop. If it's a second hand unit then you need to immediately back up to disc or pen anything you want to save. You are being warned that there is an issue with your hard drive. If this fails then you will lose all your information and computer won't fire up until you fit a new hard drive and install an operating system (if you actually have one). Once you have safeguarded your files it might be worth checking if your laptop is running too hot, which can damage a hard drive, is the fan switching on. There are programs free to download that can test the temperature.

New Seagate 250gb with no software

1) I assume that by "software" you mean drivers??

This link is to the seagate downloads page:
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/

2) If by "software" you mean the contents of the drive, then my suggestion is that your friend may have moved the files off of it onto his Mac instead of copying them, and that you should ask him to move them back.

3) What operating system are you using ("Windows XP", "Vista")? Does your computer detect the drive (beep when you plug it in)? Have you tried this drive on another computer, other than your friend's? Does it still work on your friend's?

I can't help much without more info, sorry.

Seagate 160GB SATA Hard Drive Installation.

Hi, Was the original 20Gb HD also a SATA or was it installed as an IDE? Try installing a fresh clean Windows rather than the restore disc. However, you will need the drivers for the SATA 160Gb and press F6 when Windows installers ask you to. Post back how things turn up or should you need further information. Hope this be of some idea/help. Good luck and kind regards.
