It would help if you posted the exact model number of your router.

Either case, assuming it is the unit pictured in your post. the Linksys WRTG 54.

You will have to turn on WEP or WAP security protocol.

This is explained with screen shots at the following link:
then click on "User Guide" under more information on the right side.
This will open a PDF file that will tell you how to set up security ( i believe it is Chapter 3).

good luck,

Need to secure my router

Try the following procedure on a computer that's directly connected to one of the router ports with an ethernet cable. This procedure will not work if you're connected wirelessly. Open a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, and type in http:192.168.1.1. A window should pop up asking for a user name and a password. Don't enter a user name and type admin for the password. Hit ok. The router setup screen should come up. Click on the Wireless tab and then the Wireless Security sub-tab. You can set up encryption on your wireless network using this screen. First select the security mode you want to use. I believe WPA gives better security but I've had some trouble using it on older computers. I use WEP. I've been able to get this encryption scheme to work with all of my computers. Next select the type of encryption. I like 128 bit 26 hex digits. Next enter a pass phrase and hit generate. The pass phrase is like a password. It should now generate four 26 character keys made up of various letters and numbers. Write down the first key and make sure you've checked the 1 box for default transmit key. Save your setting and exit. You wireless network is now secure. If you try to connect to it using a wireless device you will be prompted for a security key. Depending on the operating system you're running, you may just be able to enter the pass phrase or you may need to enter the 26 character key you wrote down. You should only have to do this once for each of your wireless computers. After the first time the computer connects to the secured network it should automatically remember the security code. I hope this advice helps you out.

I am trying to configure my wireless router for wpa-personal wireless security

It is recommended to enable encryption on your wireless router before your wireless network adapters. Please establish wireless connectivity before enabling encryption. Your wireless signal may degrade when enabling encryption due to the added overhead. Before you start make sure your computer is directly connected to your router.

1- open a browser and on the address box type the following and press enter ---> http://192.168.0.1
2- on the next screen you will be asked for your routers username and password in order to login. If you have'nt change this information before you can use the following (click log in after)
Username : admin
Password: password
3- once you are in, on the left side menu click on
WIRELESS SETTINGS
4- on the next screen you will see below
WIRELESS SECURITY MODE:
Security Mode:-___________________
Next to Security Mode, select Enable WPA-Personal Security
5- a new menu appears below and asks for the following:
Next to Cipher Mode select--->Auto.
Next to Personal/Enterprise select---> Personal.
Next to Passphrase, enter a key (passphrase). The key is an
alpha-numeric password between 8 and 63 characters long. The password can include symbols (!?*&_) and spaces. Make sure you enter this key exactly the same on all other wireless clients.
Enter the passphrase again next to Confirmed Passphrase.
6- Click Save Settings to save your settings. If you are configuring the router with a wireless adapter, you will lose connectivity until you enable WPA-PSK (or WPA2-PSK) on your adapter and enter the same passphrase as you did on the router.

If you have further questions please do not hesitate to ask me...Good Luck!!!

Wireless Network?

The modern laptop and Wii will be no problem. Windows 98 will work but it can be much trickier to set up.

Parts needed
1 x Wireless Router - You can pick up a 2WIRE Router from around £20 on eBay
3 x Wireless LAN Network Adaptors - Around £20 each.

Firstly, the Router. This bit connects to your telephone line and broadcasts your broadband signal by radio and allows several computers to use one service. When you buy a router make sure it includes installation software. You can install routers without, but it's a whole lot easier if you have it.

Next you need to be able to receive the broadband radio signal on your computers and Wii.To receive the signal you need Wireless LAN Network Adaptors on each device. Network Adaptors also have software, which allows you to install the drivers needed.

Your laptop may already have a wireless adaptor built in.
You can check this by clicking
Start\Programs\Accessories\System Tools\Communications\Network Connections
Then see if a Wireless adaptor is present. If it isn't, you can install one inside the laptop by buying a laptop wireless network card. Easier, is to buy a USB Wireless LAN Network Adaptor which just plugs in to a USB socket on the laptop.

Look for LAN Network adaptors that are suitable for the Wii and a separate one suitable for Windows 98. Most will be ok for the laptop.

Install the router first. just do what the software tells you, then install the LAN adaptor drivers on each device you want networked.

Finally, make sure you secure your router signal. That stops the guy next door using your network and offers some security from hackers. Your router will include a firewall and you can set up a key code that your adaptors will need before they can connect. Unless the guy next door has the key, he won't be able to use
your network and play your MP3s...hoorah!
Follow the instructions given in the software to set up a WPA or WEP security key.

Great fun, you'll love it if you can get it all going.
