Is it compatible with your OS? have you tried searching for a comptible software and driver for that OS>?

i would assume that your printer is using a usb connection right.

then the most that you can do is try to jump from one usb slot to another so that your computer will be able to detect that the printer is connected.

with regards to ser71 posts, his steps are good and in essence to be followed.

feel free to post any reactions you have...

IF you cannot print from Mac then please do the following steps to fix your problem:

In order to correct this problem, uninstall the
printer driver packages installed for printers you do not use on your
system. Macintosh® OS X comes pre-installed with other packages automatically. This can sometimes cause conflicts and are not generally needed.

In order to remove the packages, you will need to begin by opening
the hard drive that contains the OS X system software or the Root
folder. Normally double-clicking on the Macintosh Hard Drive icon will open automatically to the Root folder.

    1. Double-click on the Library folder.

    2. Double-click on the Printers folder.

    3. Select and delete the folders for Epson, Cannon and HP.
NOTE:Do not delete any other items from this folder since it may effect operation of other items that are connected to the computer.

    1. Empty the trash.

The other software is removed from the system. You should re-select the Brother unit from the Print Center and try printing.

    Goodluck,
Please don't forget to accept the solution as fixya..

Typically, a Brother machine stops printing, because the connection between the computer and the Brother machine is lost. There are multiple reasons for a lost connection.

  1. The Brother print driver is Offline.

  2. The Brother printer driver is not set as the default printer driver.

  3. The computer, not the monitor, connected to the Brother machine is set to go into sleep or standby mode. When the computer goes into sleep or standby mode, the connection between the computer and the Brother machine is lost and needs to be re-established.
Follow the steps below in order to re-establish the connection between the Brother machine and the computer:
  1. Verify that the Brother machine is connected with a USB cable and is not on a network.

  2. Verify the power cord and USB cable are securely connected. If the USB cable is loose on either end, disconnect and reconnect the cable securely. Test the machine by trying to print. If the machine does not print, go to STEP3.

  3. Cycle the power of the Brother machine by unplugging the power cord from power outlet, wait approximately one minute and plug back in. Once the Brother machine displays the date and time after plugging it back in, test the machine by trying to print. If the machine does not print, to Step 4.

  4. Reboot the computer connect to the Brother machine and then try to print again.

SOURCE: how to install LAN Brother MFC-5840CN on Windows 7

I plugged the printer into my laptop and let windows 7 install the drivers. It couldn't get the correct driver for the printer itself. Let Windows fix the problem. I then unplugged the printer and performed a network install, Windows picked up a driver was already installed and then use this driver. Can now print via a network or locally.

MY MFC 5840CN ERROR MESSAGE READS "UNABLE TO CLEAN" DOES NOT APPEAR TO HAVE ANYTHING JAMMED OR STUCK INSIDE. WHAT DO I DO?

That error means the ink absorber box is full, no more room for waste ink. There are instructions on this site to reset, but best to have the box replaced at a shop and reset. The whole job about $80.00

Empty Ink Cartrage message when cartrage still has a lot of ink.

I'm going to provide you a solution worth many dollars now you can use your left over half filled cartidges and in future also use the cartridges to the extreme.
1. Go to menu and select manual override for toner cartridges and then only replace toner when the print quality starts to suffer. This can save you thousands of dollars over the life of this fine printer.
2. download and read this

MFC-5840CN "unable to clean" and "machine code 50"

you have to fix the encoder strip into right position within the ph carrier! do push the head left/right to see if there are waves infront of it. if so, fix the strip into position!

BTW:

If you refill your carts use 2ml glycerol (from drugstore) with 10ml dye-ink: mix well before refilling. For bk use 1,5ml glycerol with 20ml bk dye-ink.

The glycerol prefents the ph/nozzels and tubesystem from drying up!
