Sony ICD-P210, ERR ACCESS message

My Sony ICD-P210 has stopped functioning. The unit displays error message ERR ACCESS. By taking out the battery and inserting it again nothing has been changed. How can I fix this problem? Thanks!

Your problem may have been caused when you removed the unit from the PC without using the "safely remove hardware" option.
What you need to do is download the latest version of Digital Voice Editor (I think we are up to 3.1 now)
When you connect the ICD unit it will probably give you a number of access errors
Ignore them and go to the IC Recorder Menu. Select WHOLE and DELETE. Delete everything.
After a minute or so the unit will come to life and you'll see the Directories that are standard in your unit.
Remove the hardware from the computer (safely! by closing the program first) and turn the unit off.
Now turn it on...... Bingo!

Access error, new batteries don't help

From Sony Help... Error: ACCESS

Solution:
The battery indicator will flash and/or the IC recorder will display the error ACCESS when the batteries are low. Install new, fully-charged batteries to resolve this issue.

NOTE: Be sure to install the type of batteries specified in the user manual. Manuals are available online through the Manuals/Specs/Warranty link on this page.

The troubleshooting steps listed above should resolve your issue. If you have completed all of the steps and the issue is not resolved, service may be required.

Turning Off Recorder

Yes. Putting it on hold and then pressing the stop button will turn off the recorder. You can turn it back on by taking it off hold. It is technically off even though when you press a button while it is off it tells you that it is on hold. Don't worry, your batteries are safe for now =).

Digital voice recorder completely 'locked-up'

Any time an electronic device lockup there is two main reasons. The first is a data error. A data error happens when incorrect digital information enter certain IC chips, and cause the chip to lock up. This is sometimes called system busy. Similar to when a computer freezes up due to corrupt software or a computer virus. To fix you remove all power to the IC chips. Removing the batteries is not enough, due to the fact that circuit boards have components on them that hold voltage. Additional batteries, coils, capacitors. You have to remove the covers and take the main digital board out. Check to make sure there is no other battery on the board. Some boards have an additional battery source for storing date and time and other info. remove that battery. Either short all capacitors and coils. or let them dissipate, sit for a day of two . Install board back in machine this should clear any system busy type problems. If the problem remains, the digital IC chip or chips are bad and have to be replaced. So boards may have a way of reset the circuits. A technical manual or a call to tech support is required.

Err access

i have this issue more or less whenever i change the batteries, i use rechargeables and i think that may be part of the issue. anyway... as silly as it sounds i just keep taking the batteries in and out and messing around swapping them with AAAs from other gadgets that i have and eventually the device works again and all my recordings are still there.

it just happened again this evening, when i put 2 newly charged batteries back into it after them being out for about 24hours.
i messed around with combinations of flat rechargeable and alkaline and charged batteries and eventually it worked again, when i used a charged and an almost flat rechargable combo. i mustve put the batteries in and out about a hundred times but it does the trick in the end.

oh, i have a ICD P520 by the way, but i think theyre all the same. and i have to agree with that other pointless post, what a load of ****. you shouldnt pay this much money for something that doesnt work properly.
goodluck.
