So.... Who uses a VCR any more. They are ancient history.
They don't last forever so perhaps it's time to think ahead....

The modern way to Record video is to use a Hard Disk Drive Recorder rather than a VCR. They have a built in tuner and can record 2 stations at once and have a built in Electronic Program Guide. The EPG info is transmitted with the Digital TV transmission from the broadcaster.
I bought one 2 weeks ago for an old 85yo friend so he could record late night stuff and play back later. He still uses the VCR but only for old VHS Tape playback. I got him a TEAC HDR9650TS Digital Video Recorder and I picked it up new for Aus$188.

Main Features:
DVB-T Twin Digital Turners
DVR Recording: Record three channels while watching a 4th from same network Smart Series Record feature to record a whole series at a touch of a button
2.5" Sata Hard disk: 500GB
Time Shift Function (Pause live TV)
HDMI Digital Output
Digital Audio Output
CVBS/YPbPr/SPDIF connectors
Supports TV formats 4:3 and 16:9
Electronic Program Guide (EPG) up to 7 days in advance
EPG searching and auto download
Recorded program edit
Parental Control
Copy files from internal HDD to external HDD
Built-in WiFi
Network Playback
USB 2.0 Interface

Cheers
Good Luck
Maybe you can get a little more life out of that VCR still

How can I link my VCR to the HDTW in order to record programing?

A VCR cannot record HD programming. To record non-HD programs, you would need to hook the cable coming out of your cable box to your VCR, and then have a cable going from your VCR to your TV. If you hook it up this way though, there is a chance that you may have to have your VCR on in order to watch TV.

I have a Toshiba VCR w522 and would like to record a program previously recorded from a DVR. Is it possible?

If the vcr has two scarts connect the DVR player to one and select that imput. Watch the program using the the other scart connected to the TV. Press record on the vcr and then start the DVR player going. If it doesn't have two scarts use the front panel jacks to connect the DVR player.
The only time you won't be able to record a program is if somekind of anti-copy system is employed.

Lost manual. Cannot get HR A591U JVC VCR program to record a future cable tv program. Seems I have tried everything but it does not record as I set up. It will record an existing show by pressing...

Timer Recording JVC VCR HR A591U
Timer recording can be programmed on-screen with
the remote control. The built-in timer allows automatic
unattended recording of up to 8 programs within 1
month.

EXAMPLE: Program a timer recording for the 26th day,
channel 125 (CATV), 11:00 - 11:30 PM on timer program
number 1 (Tape speed: EP).

When a TV is connected with an audio/video cable, turn the
TV and this VCR on and select the video input mode on the
TV.

• After timer recording is completed, the VCR turns off
automatically.
• You can program the timer recording while a regular
recording is in progress; the menu screens will not be
recorded.
• The timer recording will start at 20 seconds before the time
you predetermined.

Press MENU on the Remote.
Check the “TIMER REC SET”
option is selected, then press
ENTER.

Press SET –/+ to select one of
the program lines, then press
ENTER.

Press SET –/+ to select the
date, then press ENTER.

Set the start time, end time,
channel and tape speed as in
step 3.
NOTE: To record from external
source, press SET –/+
and set the channel to
"L". "L" will appear next
to CH 125 (or 69).

To enter other programs,
repeat step 2 through 4. Or,
press MENU twice to return
to the normal screen.

Press TIMER on the Remote.
The power will go off, the
TIMER REC indicator ( ) will
light and the VCR stands by
for recording.

To cancel a program:

Press the SET –/+ to select the
“TIMER REC SET” option in the
MENU. Then press SET –/+ to
select the unnecessary program,
and press CANCEL to cancel the
program.

I would like to tape my programs on the vcr(goldstar) I am not used to this product

do you wish to record while watching or while away.....while watching make sure your vcr is set to CH 3...when the show comes on press record
(a blank tape should be inserted) the red button on most vcrs.......while away the channel selector must be on the ch you wish to record...using the remote for the vcr press menu/program a event (this is where your vcr most have the correct date / time and not flashing 12:00)..set the day..time to start recording and time to stop recording..your ch will always be 3..now that vcr is set the main thing is make sure that cable channel selector is on that channel

happy recording

Yes a VCR can recorrd another program of your favourite channel while you are watching another. This is the reason why a tuner is incorporated into the VCR. You will need to tune the VCR tuner accordingly so that this function can be made use of . Also you can use the timer too record any TV program when you are out of house/station. I think that must have been what you had in mind? good day

I MISPLACED MY USER MANUAL

You have to go the main menu and select record times, and day. Make sure you leave your tv set on, and on the channel that you wish to record the program on. You can set the start and stop times a few minutes before and after on the vcr, just to make sure you get the whole program. You can also set the vcr to record this program every day, any day of when ever you wish you can just manually hit "record on the vcr remote. Good luck, let me know how you make out! Thanks

How to connect a vcr for recording programs

1 - To start with..
Plug aerial lead into the "RF input" on rear of vcr
--> now you can tape programs (providing vc is "tuned" correctly)

2 - Plug a lead from "RF output" into tv's "RF input"
--> now you can watch programs on tv _independently_ of vcr (ie can be watching 1 program & taping a separate one on vcr)

3 - Plug red/white/yellow cable from vcr's "VIDEO/AUDIO output" into tv's "VIDEO/AUDIO input"
--> now you can
1) play a tape in vcr, & watch it on tv
& 2) change what watching on tv via vcr's remote

* Note: This is for analogue terrestial television (aerial on roof), not digital/satellite tv, connecting to stereo, etc, etc (the "more involved " setups)
