Question about Kitchen Ranges

6 Answers

I have a 20 Magic Chef freestanding oven Model# 31FA-92KW. Recently the oven part won't lite up (the top burners will). I have been told that the oven ignitor ismost likely the problem. Can it be changed out with a replacement part without pulling it out from the wall (through the front)? And assuming I kill the circuit breaker is there anything I should be worried about trying to tackle this replacement myself?

You cannot change the ignitor without taking the Oven out from the wall.

it is accessible by removing the lower panel inside the oven. the ignitor will be mounted to the burner. Most commonly on the back left side or may be on top of the burner.

In most cases it can be visually seen looking in to the broiler compartment in the upper back left on the burners tube.

if you DIY, always be very careful!

about the breaker, of course you need to turn it off and always be careful when working on that.

thanks for using fixya.

Hi,

Chances are you have an igniter that is going bad and needs to be replaced. Don't allow a bad igniter to operate indefinitely, replace it as soon as possible.

I would recommend you to call a technician yo get it repaired If you cannot do it by urself.

Goodluck,
Please don't forget to rate the solution.

A faulty igniter is probably the most common cause, however there
    are others:

    -- defective thermostat

    -- defective selector switch

    -- defective gas safety valve

If you are certain the igniter is ok, and again it might be a good idea to
    call a professional appliance technician.

You model number should be three letters then four numbers like this: CEC1536

My money would be that the ignitor would need to be changed from the back. Also you will want to cut the power and only the gas and bleed the oven before working on it.

Did you try cleaning the ignitor? If there is grease or other things on the ignitor it will not light. It will also not light if it is wet.

Good Luck!

I would also suggest to unplug the appliance from the main AC power just to avoid any surprises.

    Great link bestdarngood.

The most common cause of this symptom is a defective ignitor like you think. Oven ignitors can glow and allow enough current through to open the oven gas valve but just not produce enough heat to ignite the gas immediately (see the link below).

In that case, replacing the oven ignitor is the usual solution.

you will most likely not need to move the oven the above link which you can click on HERE

will show you how it is in the oven and you can replace it by going off of the diagram. You should switch off the circuit breaker before working or unplug the oven just for safety. Good Luck and let me know if you need any more help

I have a magic chef oven model # 61S04PAW. the

Electric gas igniters sometimes get stuck in one position causing a clicking sound. The clicking sound that you hear is the electric arc that is pulsing from the igniter conductor (wire) to ground (the gas burner). It receives power from the electrical outlet that the stove is plugged into.
Residue from food and sometimes cleaning products may be preventing the igniter from producing a spark (Arc) to the base of the burner. This is a common problem that occurs when the stove has been cleaned or food is allowed to build up. Make sure that the igniter and the burner base are clean and dry. This will help with proper operation. Oven cleaner and a small tooth brush may be used to accomplish this. Another problem with ignition may occur if you have too little (touching) or too much space between the igniter and the base of the burner; it will prevent the burner from igniting. You should only have a little more space than the thickness of a nickel between the burner base and the igniter. A good “blue” arc from the igniter to the burner base is optimal. If this doesn’t work, you may need to replace the electric igniter module. Good luck.

Magic chef oven pilot light out

Hi, If the oven has a standing pilot too, Open the bottom door and locate the main burner. Follow the burner toward the rear of the oven and there will be a flame switch attatched to the burner. Hold the flame near the flame switch and the gas should ignite.
Some model do not have a standing pilot in the oven. Please get me your model number off the label located around the opening of the lower door so I can look this up and instruct you better.

Replacement Parts For Vintage Magic Chef stove

You probably have a 1940's model of Magic Chef. Check for the model number under the lid of the cook top on the upper right hand side of the stove. It should have the model number and the serial number, too. You will need both. The Old Applicance Club run by Jack Santoro is the place to go along with a site called "Antique gas stoves"in Georgia. Good luck with the world of vintage stoves.
