Have not used my Epson R1800 for almost 6 months. When I turn on the power the printer head, with the cartridges, stayed at the very right end, not moving. The paper and ink lights flash and the head just...

Your User's Guide is available here:

http://files.support.epson.com/pdf/r1800_/r1800_ug.pdf

After leaving the printer inactive for a extended period you should expect the ink cartridges to be dried up and the print head 'gummed' in place.

You will need to refer to page 82 of the pdf, Cleaning the Printer.

As part of cleaning remove the existing ink cartridges and while the cartridges are removed try and clean the print head of any ink residue. Note that if the red light is on or flashing above an ink cartridge the printer sees it as empty (dried up).

The print head will not move if ink cartridges need replacement; replace ink cartridges according to the red lights, likely all. Press the ink button to see if the printer will begin the charging cycle. If all is well the green power light will stay on and the red ink light will go out.

If you do not get this desired outcome try Cleaning the Print Head, page 73 of the User Guide. Hold down the ink button when the red light is off for 3 seconds. Run a nozzle check pattern; if nozzels are not printing a clean pattern, repeat this process up to 3 or 4 times.

The R1800 has not been used for a long time and it does not print. I have shaken the print cartridges but it is not being recognised as full when I want to print. What do you suggest I do??

Change all the cartridges to Epson Genuine Cartridges.

Did you use Epson Genuine Cartridges?

ALL…. Epson & Brother Requires Genuine Epson Cartridges. !!!!!!!!
That sounds like your problem.

In Purchasing Epson's CX 5400, CX4600, & CX7400 and more, I found out that Epson does not like Generic Printer Cartridges. I also Purchased a Brother. That also does not like Generic Print Cartridges. Color that should be Yellow, will turn out Green, Blue Brown, etc.

These printers have a CHIP that will detect if it is Generic or Genuine. When they see it’s Generic Cartridges, it will print lines thru the words, stripes across the picture and also do a mix match with the colors. It also will not let you print anything, if only one of the cartridges is empty.

I wanted to print only Black, and would not let me, because I did not have any ink in one of my cyan cartridges. Go figure.

That's what these Companies do., so they can keep selling the ink cartridges. Some Printers, are able to use Generic, and some are refillable. Some you can refill them up yourself and I heard, quite MESSY.

So I learned, thru trial and error, that you must use the ORIGINAL Genuine Cartridges for these PRINTERS. Some people say some models work fine compatible, but not mine.......

I had to replace the printer, but Epson, Lexmark & Brothers are always on sale. My Brother & Epson cost me $50.00 with Rebate. .

This is the only advice I can give you. If you find this helpful, pls rate me.

Thanks and Good Luck :0)

MacBook Pro Epson Print Driver Dilemma

your problem is about profiles. The gutenprint is the only way to print from intel to r1800, but this driver don't use the same ICC profiles. You have to use one of three solutions below:
1 the best, you have a profile calibrating device, you make a profile of your couple ink-paper and you convert your document into this ICC profile.
2 you convert your picture into your software in one of the Epson generic profiles (hey probably still are on your computer) and you print whithout color managment
3 (awful) you anticipate the color distorsion and you tune your picture to be bad on the screen but pretty good on paper.

Problem using sublimation inks

Since you are using sublmation ink, the cartridges are probably aftermarket and may not meet Epson standards. Aftermarket chipped cartridges are notorious for failing to 'communicate' with Epson printers, even when the cartridge is brand new. Before taking the printer to a service center, you might try purchasing new cartridges of your ink from your reseller. If that fixes the problem then your fight is with the ink reseller, not Epson. If it doesn't fix the problem and your printer is still under warranty, take it to an authorized service center, and remember, using non-Epson ink does NOT void the waranty.
