brown/black tar-like substance is caking on the bottom of the iron. It comes off and permanently stains clothes. How do I clean the steam system (white vinegar?) and the botttom of the iron. I have not done anything yet for fear of ruining the iron or making the problem worse.

Hi, two problems:

DIA' s problem - the brown water is due to poor water quality and debris in the boiler and iron sytem. Rowenta is clear that they do not want anyone to cleaning solutions - only clear filtered drinking water to rinse out the boiler (via the water inlet screw hole) and I have found running the system dry, letting it cool, rinsing and draining the boiler several times before putting unit away works fine.

Guest' problem with brown/black tar substance is likely caused by too hot and iron setting (steam setting may also be too high) for ironing man-made synthetics (like Nylon, Rayon, Polyester or blends are basically petroleum based fabrics) that breakdown or melt, leaving deposits on the iron's stainless steel soleplate. A secondary cause could be bad water or debris in the boiler/iron in which the solution for DIA's problem might provide relief. Cleaning the soleplate is tricky, I use nothing stronger than an old fashioned wooden orange stick to gently scrap of all traces of the "stuff" and dry "Dutch" cleanser w/ a terry cloth or old cotton sock to polish without scratching the soft stainless soleplate...

To clean the sole plate, Rowenta has a sole plate cleaning kit for $9.99, however, Dritz sewing notions makes one too and it is much cheaper. You take an old CLEAN dishcloth and squeeze about an inch of the cleaner on the towel. Using a hot, dry iron move it back and forth over the cleaner until the sole plate is smooth and clean. I then use a q-tip to clean any residue from the sole plate. Keep turning the towel until all the cleaner is removed from the iron. Any time my iron becomes sticky I use this method and it works great.

The symptoms you describe are indicative of mineral buildup in your iron. The instructions probably say to use distilled water in the iron and may include a procedure for removing mineral deposits

you should have a controll or button on the iron that tells it to release the steam. make sure that the button or controll is not stuck.

Sand like particles come out when pressing the steam button leaving grit all over my clothes

I'm guessing that these particles are white or almost white. If so, it is just a build up of chalk from hard water. You will probably find that they just brush off the clothing with your hand. Just buy yourself a proprietary steam iron descaler and follow the instructions, all should be well

Rust colored steam that stains clothing ironed

Hi, Brown water and whitescale are often the result of the water you use in the iron... If you have scale, white vinegar will clean that... For brown water, empty the iron, rinse out the insides with bottled water, and then use the bottled water instead...

What is the best way to clean my Rowenta iron.

I always run the DG980 till the steam runs dry, unplug and let cool. Rowenta recommends using clear water ONLY. They even provide a small hose & faucet adaper to flush out the steam tank reservoir.

Since it sounds like you do not have it, the next best thing is to use filtered water (I have a 3 cylinder water filter in the kitchen for drinking water), The tank has a plug on the side which should be removed once unit is cold, tank flushed with filtered water and drained completely and leave the treaded metal plug and trim cover off to air dry completely, as well as the blue tank.

Low steam due to clogged vents

Only clean your Rowanta 980 with clear filtered water only. The unit comes with a small hose and faucet adapter to flush the steam tank thru the threaded plug when cold. Do not use hard tap water, that is where most of the mineral deposits come from. The other is storing the iron with water in it without purging all steam/water tank dray. Do this several times running dry with the burst of steam over towels to blow as much of the stuff out as possible. A new sole plate will cost close to $90 or so if you want to replace rather than clean it.
