Question about Televison & Video

I PURCHASED A SAMSUNG MODEL HLN43W REAR PROJECTION TV FROM CIRCUIT CITY ON 05/22/04 WITH A TWO YEAR PROTECTION PLAN. AFTER 6 MONTHS FROM DATE OF PURCHASE THE CHANNELS STARTED CHANGING ABOUT EVERY SECOND WITHOUT TOUCHING THE REMOTE, THINKING THAT IT WAS THE REMOTE CONTROL THAT WAS CAUSING THE PROBLEM I REMOVED THE TWO BATTERIES, BUT THE PROBLEM CONTINUED. I CALLED CIRCUIT CITY AND THEY SENT A REPAIR MAN WHO REPLACED A PART IN THE TV AND THE PROBLEM WAS RECTIFED. NOW NEALY FOUR YEARS AFTER PURCHASING THE TV THE SAME PROBLEM HAS RETURNED. I ONCE AGAIN CALLED CIRCUIT CITY BUT AS THE PROTECTION PLAN HAS LAPSED, THEY SENT OUT A REPAIT MAN BUT UNFORTUNATELY AS THIS IS AN INTERMITENT PROBLEM, WHEN THE REPAIR MAN CAME,THE TV WAS WORKING PERFECTLY AND HE LEFT AFTER PAYING HIM $99.00 FOR A CALL OUT. THAT NIGHT WHEN WE TURNED ON THE TV WE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM, CHANNELS CHANGING BY THEMSELVES. THE PROBLEM IS NOW HAPPENING ALL THE TIME - WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR ADVICE.

Thanks for your reply. When the TV repair man was sent by Circit City recently came unfortunately the TV was working perfectly. He suggested that if it started playing up again we should unplug the TV for about 15 minutes then try again. We did this and after about 1 hour the problem started again. About a week ago we were out of town for two days and once again I unplugged the TV when we came back we thaught the problem had been solved, but after about two hours it started again. What I am going to do today is what you have sugested, reprogramming all the channels unplugging for 24 hours and see if this solves the problem.

Hey there

do you still remember what the tech changed on your tv before? we can assume that its still the one.

some explainations why channels change by itslef is due to
some corrosion on the main board near the channel up/down switches for one. The next common cause is that the EPROM may be failing or a fault with the main control processor. A good test to see if the EPROM is having a problem is to program in all the channels off the cable and then unplug the TV over night and then plug back in the see if any channels are missing.

i would also assume that this tv has a bad button assembly and is a common tv problem.

feel free to post any questions that you have. thanks

if you could locate the reciept for that previous job, it will lessen your difficulty.

with regards to what The Machine has posted,

There is a chance that the channel change buttons on the tv are corroded or stuck.

Otherwise is could be a eeprom problem or a main control board problem.

You can test the eeprom by programming on the channels then unplugging the TV for 24 hours then checking to see if any of the channels are missing.

Is it only going up through the channels, down, or all over the place?

Since it is only going up I would definitely suspect the Channel Up button on the control panel of the TV.

If you open the TV you may be able to disconnect the button board to test, you will then only be able to use the remote, if the problem goes away then you have a problem with that button board. You may be able to find a replacement button board from either eBay, google, or Samsung themselves.

If disconnecting the button board doesn't solve anything then either the EEPROM or main control board is the culprit.

Power is on but the screen is black and i have no sound

I have over 10 years experience in electronic tech support.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but the problem you've described can't be fixed with troubleshooting. Your TV will have to be repaired. There is a part that has developed a defect and needs to be replaced. If you're still in warranty, the TV will be repaired at no charge to you. The warranty would likely be at least one year from the date of purchase from the manufacturer. If you purchased an extended service plan they will repair the TV at no charge as well.

If the TV is no longer in warranty, it will likely cost a minimum of $150 parts and labor. This is assuming that you only need one circuit board or small part. If the problem is more than one of the circuit boards, the price of repair could go much higher.

I hope I've provided you useful assistance and that this information allows you to make an informed decision as to how to proceed from here. Please be sure to vote on my response. I hope I've earned a good rating from you today.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Age of tv?

I purchased mine from Circuit city back in spring of 2002 as a display model that they were no longer selling. So I would assume 2001 which would be almost 8 years old. Excellent tv!

I think it could be a faulty diode on the power supply board. If you can check this for yourself otherwise call out a competant technician. Good luck.

Problem with Samsung PCJ522R 52": White is yellowish

It is possible that you may have had a leak in one or more of your CRT coolant chambers, see: Product: Projection TV Bulletin # PJT01-001 Model: PCJ, PCK and HCJ series Bulletin Date: 6/1/01 SUBJECT: CRT Leakage Background: When repairing set for CRT leakage, check if CRT has Expansion Chamber installed. If not, install Expansion Chamber on all 3 CRTs. Production during November 1999 ~ September 2000 will need Expansion Chamber installed. Rear panel will indicate production date. This can also leave a residue on your printed circuit board that would have to be cleaned off to prevent further corrosion and leakage currents. Hope this helps.
