  • go to device manager and check that the Universal Serial Bus controllers are in the list,
  • if they are, right click on it and select scan for hardware changes,
  • this will get windows to check that the drivers are installed .
  • use the USB ports on the back of the pc
  • also check the ports with other usb peripherals such as memory stick, mouse, etc,
  • if the USB's still no good
  • go to start Button then to run and type in the box "cmd"(no quotation marks)
  • when a box opens with a black background type in "sfc/scannow" have your windows cd ready in case it needs it ,
this will check all the windows system files are present and correct if they are not ,it will install them off the system disc (windows cd).

good luck

Go to control panel/system/hardware/device manager

look for the Usb ports at bottom. any of them that are marked with question mark, will need to be uninstalled, then scan for hardware changes(actions)

that should do the trick.

otherwise, you may need new drivers..see here possibly, depending on what printer you have.

Greetings....

Please try to check if your USB port both rear and front USB port are not defective. Most common problem of defective usb ports are when plug your usb devices it won't recognize the device you inserted. So to make sure that your USB Ports are not the main cause why your computer won't recognize devices you inserted.

I can't get my computer to recognize the port that printer is plugged in to. I just bought this printer and it won't print anything. I have tried troubleshooting and the printer makers on line support.

Normally Windows will automatically detected and load drivers for standard, ECP, and EPP parallel printer ports. USB ports used for printers, that's more complicated and often requires that drivers and/or software be loaded BEFORE connecting a USB printer

Computer won't recognize USB ports

If you are plugging a USB device into a different port it takes some time to recognize and install it - it re-installs for every port. There could be cable and/or port issues as well. Plug the printer into a USB port that the mouse does work on and allow several minutes for it to detect install it.

The major problem occurs ?????? You keep on trying installing but it will not succeed????????.

The solution change your usb cable and buy one good quality cable specified as USB 2.0 standard I hope your problem will be solved

Remember one thing never install the software while your printer is connect and live - disconnect it and install from the cd because hp installation is programmed accordingly that you have to install the driver first and it will ask to make it live and it automatically detect and register the port in your system.

Thanks from Hothawk

USB port problem

I would try first of all making sure that all of your drivers are up to date. I am saying this because it is always a good first step, but I am not 100% confident that this will fix it. There are a few updates that are listed as URGENT for your specific computer. The link to your drivers is below. The main one that concerns me is the Intel Chipset Driver located under chipset. This is listed as URGENT and may be a solution to your problem. The chipset is part of the motherboard that can be responsible for controlling your USB ports. If this does not remedy the situation I would contact Dell support for a possible solution.

Usb ports do not recognize peripheral devices such as printers or memory sticks.

Even usb devices have to have drivers installed. Most printers and the like should be installed before you plug them in or it gives the os problems
