If you are using xp, try going to the control panel, sound and audio devices, click on audio tab.
to check the mic settings, click on the volume tab under the sound recording sections. Make sure that the mic is selected and the volume turned up. It may be working only to record, not to hearback without recording...so you may have to actually be recording or talking to someone to know if its workings.
To check the sound, check to see if your audio device is selected under "sound playback" section...and make sure that all channels are unmuted and turned up. you may also have to check the volume control on the laptop (actual buttons on the pc) if there are any, and make sure that the volume is up and unmuted there also.
Hope this helps.
This may not help you situation, but I had a similar problem and it was a conflict with a program. I installed a program called Tunebite, and it requires configuration of you sound card, when I updated my sound card driver, it conflicted with the program so I didn't have sound. However, I opened the program and reconfigured my sound card again with the new driver and it fixed the problem. If you have that program, that may be the problem. If not, look for programs on your computer that requiring configuring of your sound card. Hope this helps.
