Question about LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini, 500 GB Hard Disk Drive with Gigabit Ethernet & USB 2.0 Interface, 7200 rpm... IDE Hard Drive

Information used- capacity used and available

Hello, according to 'info' on my LaCie drive the capacity is 465.76GB, and available is 80.08GB. I deleted from the drive a video project...this should have brought my available space amount down? but it hasnt and it still says the drive has only 80.08GB even though i removed a whole project.
Why is this? and do you know how i can amend it please. I need to put new video clips on it and its full almost.
Also, when it says Start Up disk is full on my mac, what does this mean and how can i empty it?
Thank you.

Re: deleting the files, did you drag the files into the trash bin and then empty it? The files don't actually leave your drive until you 'Empty Trash' on your mac's doc. Hope this helps, not sure about your startup disc problem.

LaCie 2big Triple - I replaced one drive, but capacity is wrong

Most likely the problem you are encountering is due to the RAID mode the device is set in. Most RAID arrays utilize multiple drives of the same size, or with drives of differing size, they just use a portion of the largest that matches the smallest drive. When the device rebuilt the array it partitioned off a portion of the 4tb drive of the same size as the existing 500gb drive. If you want to use full capacity of both drives you would need to use JBOD mode, which just strings the disks together into a storage pool using all available space. This won't offer the data redundancy of RAID1 or speed boost of RAID0, but should allow using full space.

Backup any vital data before doing anything, then look for a switch on the back. Rather than RAID0 or 1 the options may be labelled Safe or Fast, but JBOD is usually still labelled JBOD, or sometimes Big. You can try just flipping the switch to JBOD and seeing if it rebuilds to use all space. If that doesn't work you may need to remove the 4tb drive, connect it to a different system and erase it to get rid of the 500gb partition, then with the Lacie set to JBOD reinstall the 4tb drive so it will add its full size to the array.

The safest option though would be to buy another 4tb drive, backup all data and install both 4tb drives with the device set to RAID1/Safe. You would only get 4tb of total storage, but it would mirror the data on both drives so if one fails the other will still have your data. With JBOD you won't have any auto-backup. If a drive fails the data on it will be lost.

Included "Start Lacie" file not

Format the drive with win XP or use a third-party HDD software like partition magic.

keep in mind that the choice of a correct file system is very important, "NTFS support volumes up to 16EB" while FAT12 is limited to 32 MB.

Keep me posted!

Hi, I can't find LaCie program on my XP where can I find it?

the LaCie Rugged drive does not require any specific software to operate under windows XP, but maybe you are talking about the bundled software that came with it.
Those are initially on the drive itself at the time of purchase. If you formatted the drive, then they are gone and you will need to download them from LaCie website. Some of them are not available for download there so you will need to contact LaCie customer support to get those.

I cant see my external lacie hard drive on my mac with the Lacie Network Assistant. The hard drive is visible with the finder though. With the dashboard and with the finder I am able to move or copy files...

for the product that you selected for your question, it is impossible for the LaCie Network Assistant to see it because it is a Local drive (USB).
The LaCie Network Assistant only detects the Network LaCie drives.

My Lacie hard drive doesn't show up as a drive on my mac. How do I connect it?

Hello Chris,
if your drive has a firewire connection, we will use it.
Once the drive is connected and your computer is on, you should feel the drive is starting to spin. Some vibrations are perceptible to the touch.
Usually, the drive icon would come up on the desktop or you will be prompted to initialize the new drive. If none of that happens, we will go manually into disk utility. Is the drive listed to the right? (go by capacity to try to figure out which one it is. If you have many drives of the same capacity and they are external, unplug them while troubleshooting your LaCie drive)
If the drive is not listed, try a different port on your computer, and if still nothing happens, try a different port on your drive if available.
If you have the USB only version, try plugging both USB at the same time. One provides power and data transfer, the other offers additional power.
If there is nothing showing in disk utility still, you will need to consider getting a replacement.
If you need any data that you manage to put on the drive at some point and your drive is out of warranty, you can take out the internal hard drive (which is a laptop sized drive) and connect it to a computer to see if you can access it that way. If it does not work, you will have to contact a data recovery company.

My Lacie isn't letting me move files onto it. I need to move movie files over from my mac to the Lacie, but it's not working. I had added .wav files a few months ago, and those are accessible, but now that...

did you use your drive with a PC too?
What you describe is commonly linked to a drive formatted as NTFS (a windows partition format) which is read only on a plain MAC system. There are add ons you can install on your MAC to make NTFS writable. I can direct you to one if you need.
Another possibility is that your drive is formatted as MS-Dos (FAT32) which is read and write enabled for both PC and MAC, but it has the negative aspect of limiting file size to 4GB. So in your case, maybe your movie files are larger then 4GB and your drive is formatted Fat 32.
To verify the format of the drive, go to DIsk utility, select the LaCie drive and read the information that shows at the bottom of the Disk Utility window.

Blue light on Lacie Drive blinks.

I have seen the power adapters go out on the Lacie external drives and that causes the light to flash. You can check the voltages coming out of the adapter with a multimeter if you have one available. The voltages should be 5 and 12 volts. If you don't get that then the adapter is bad, you can contact Lacie about a replacement adapter or get a generic case and swap your drive to it. If you need a replacement case I have a link to more information about the one we use inshop at

I hope this helps, If so please rate my solution.

Hard drive space

Well I'm gonna need more information i.e. What operating system are using with the device etc. And also check disk management(i assume u are using either windows 2000 or XP) to see how much total disk space is available on the device. Disk Management(Right Click on My Computer then click Manage. On the left pane expand Storage then got to(click on) disk management. When there u'll see all the disk connected to your system at the time on the right pane. Look for your disk then scroll down and you'll see how much is available and how much is used!
