If your laptop cannot get online through the router, it is possible that the wireless security is enabled. Wireless security requires you to enter a password before you can connect.
You will need to access the setup page of the router to get that password.
Please follow the steps below, using your desktop since it has connection to the router:
1. On your browser's address bar, type 192.168.1.1.
2. Leave the user name blank, then the password is admin.
3. On the setup page, go to Wireless. Take note of the SSID. By default, it is linksys. But you may change that to any name to easily identify your own wireless network.
4. Under Wireless, go to Wireless Security. You will see if WEP or WPA is enabled. Copy the wireless network key. That key is the password that you will use to connect your laptop.
On your laptop, view the available wireless network. You will see your SSID and will prompt for a network key. Type here the key that you copied from the linksys page.
Once your laptop is connected wirelessly, it should be able to get online. For file and printer sharing, refer to this link.
I hope this helps!
If you can afford to loose your configuration, find the reset button and keep it pressed while the router is on by about 10 seconds. The default login is blank and the pasword 'admin'.

Do you mean the password for the setup page of the router? Or the network key for the wireless connection?
Not totally sure. The router set up by a svc. man.2 years ago. Our problem is we need the laptop which talks to the internet through the wrt54g now. To also talk to our printer whith is hard wired into a desk top in another room. At this point we arn't totally sure that there was any pw put on the router. I found no cicco or any other evidence that there is any pw on the wireless g.
