Vcr roller guide arms timout/can't make it to stoppers

I've been trying to trace down a problem with a mitsubishi hs-u776 svhs vcr -roller guides almost make it to stoppers, then timout -had the carriage out and tried hand cycling (without tape) and it would become unturnable at that spot -white greased everything and found when i pushed on double gear loading arm assembly underneath, I could complete cycle, and after a few hand cycles w/grease getting in -seemed fine again -put back together -working again, -for awhile- -this time I notice the left supply arm seems to be the one not making it to stopper and seemed the supply reel was to tight to let arm pull out tape -BUT, i could be wrong, as the first time, i couldnt hand cycle completely without a tape -can anyone point me to likely suspect? should i change the whole double gear loading arm assembly underneath? or is it likely something i've missed? hard to tell if tape is pulling to hard, as how to test that with carriage out and no power to capstan motor, or even if its in how would one do that?
p.s. I have a spare carriage that has all almost new parts except no capstan motor and out of adjustment roller guides, otherwise I'd use it (dont even want to mess w/roller guides ever again) if it comes down to it I will change every last part, as I need this working again -maybe you can suggest an order of parts to change (I also have the service manual, which has been a big help, but it doesnt have any troubleshooting info)
sincerely dennis

p.s. also, I didnt regrease or check bottom side of cam for obvious reasons-could be another possible problem area -intitially I changed cam motor before I found it was stuck with no results, of course.

I've had the same problem with my electric Walker down-riggers, the line guides didnt work well because of the crimp for the cannon ball return pully snags on the guide, the best I came up with is a cannonball snubber similar to ones used with Dipsey-Divers, made heavier for cannonballs, hope this helps

How do I set the clock without the remote?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HIGH-END-MITSUBISHI-MODEL-HS-U440-VCR-W-REMOTE-NICE-/230751842386?pt=VCRs&hash=item35b9e1b052

Look at link above, you could buy the original remote from e-bay for $25 plus get another vcr. Only two days left so act fast. Universal remotes - try a different one, other than that its going to be difficult. You could also buy another vcr that has its own remote from a thrift shop or craigslist.

My player eats the vcr tapes!

It is most likely that the pinch roller will need replacing. Once these become glazed (shiny) the tape slips over them, resulting in 'chewing' as the edges of the tape ride up or down the capstan shaft and into the top or base 'rabbit' of the exit guide nearby. Replace the roller, clean the tape path (capstan, guides, heads, take up arm, etc., *gently of course*) with alcohol solution or methylated spirit - do not use q-tips to clean the drum.

VCR should be OK after that. No further repair should be necessary here, and rubber pinch rollers for VCRs are not expensive to order as a generic part for this model.

Pinch Roller replacement on Mitsubishi Model HSU550

Another roller type thing, attached to baseplate, squeezes the tape against that roller to drive/guide it.

Cannot load tape. keeps ejecting tape when trying to load.

Remove the top cover from the VCR. If you have children in the house, look for any object lying in the mechanism. If this is clear, insert a tape slowly into the carriage & watch carefully if the cassette tape flap raises up & allows the tape to be lowered down into the mechanism, if not the flap lever at the side of the carriage may be broken. If the tape does lower into position, look to see if the tape is being pulled out by the guide arms, (normally 2 white poles) one of these may be broken. Check the half loading arm is also not obstructing the tape. If any of these parts are broken a new deck mechanism would be required.

When a tape won't eject, the problem can be caused by several things. The most common problem is that the belt that operates the eject mechanism is slipping and not allowing it to eject the tape. This can be fixed by either using a re-grip solution on the belt or have the belt replaced. Belts are inexpensive but sometimes difficult to get to. Most of the repair expense will be in the labor. Unplug the unit and take the cover off. Hopefully there will be enough clearance so you can get to the tape. Try to find the motor and belt that is responsible for operating the eject mechanism. The motor will look like a shiny cylinder, about the diameter of a quarter and will have a plastic pulley attched to the shaft. You can rotate the pulley and belt with your fingers and manually eject the tape. If the tape is around the spindles and video head, you will need to manually move the mechansim that retracts the spindles and returns the tape to the cartridge. While you may be successful in getting the tape out, you need to find out what caused the problem in the first place. Putting in another tape will most like become stuck again unless the problem is identified and resolved. Also look for a broken spring or cracked gear (missing teeth) in the eject mechanism. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance Good luck! - Jim
