A "Haynes Manual" on your car would help, but will not tell you compression values. A rule of thumb, is about 150 psi per cylinder...which doesn't really mean anything. What you need to do is remove all the spark plugs, have someone push the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor and spin the engine over four times. Record the first reading (the first turn-over) and the last. Do the rest of the cylinders the same way. THEN, squirt 20 ml of oil in each cylinder and re-do the test (this oil seals the piston rings), and the pressure will increase a bit. Then compare the readings and if two adjacent cylinders are low, then the problem will lay in that area. A very High Compression reading could mean a heavily carboned combustion area, but the exact compression reading varies, even in new cars coming off the factory line.

Good Luck,

1998 Acura Integra. P0301 misfire.

If you have already checked the spark plugs, plug wires, fuel injectors, and distributor and are still experiencing a misfire in cylinder 1 and 2, here are a few more things you can check:
  1. Compression: Check the compression in cylinder 1 and 2 using a compression tester. Low compression could cause a misfire in one or both cylinders.
  2. Vacuum Leak: Check for a vacuum leak by inspecting all hoses and fittings for cracks, damage, or looseness. You can also use a smoke machine or propane torch to locate any leaks.
  3. Ignition Coil: Check the ignition coil to ensure it is functioning properly. You can do this by swapping the coils from cylinder 1 and 2 with the coils from another cylinder and see if the misfire follows the swapped coil.
  4. Fuel Pressure: Check the fuel pressure to ensure it is within the manufacturer's specifications. Low fuel pressure can cause misfires.
  5. EGR Valve: Check the EGR valve to ensure it is functioning properly. A malfunctioning EGR valve can cause misfires.
  6. PCM/ECU: If all other components have been checked and are functioning properly, it is possible that the PCM/ECU (Powertrain Control Module/Engine Control Unit) may be faulty and may need to be replaced.
It is recommended to perform these checks in a methodical manner to narrow down the cause of the misfire. If you are not comfortable performing these checks yourself, it is recommended that you seek the assistance of a professional technician.

2004 Jeep Liberty 3.7eng Had engine rebuild. Head new valves and the works. Now have 90 compression in #6 cylinder. Took heads back to shop both are fine. What could be the problem.

You don't say how many miles on the motor, if any, since rebuild... With the lack of pertinent information, I'd have to guess that Its either a bad head gasket or the rings are gone.

I have a 2006 chevy cobalt ls. 2.2L with 142k miles. I am currently looking for the compression in psi of the stock ecotec engine. Mine is at 120Psi across the board, but not sure what the spec is.

There's no maximum spec, but no cylinder should be under 100 psi. Also, the cylinders should be within 1-20 psi of each other. If you have one cylinder under spec, could be worn rings/valve guides, blown head gasket at point between coolant jacket. If two adjacent cylinders under spec, will be blown head gasket at point between cylinders.

What are the valve lash specs for 2007 Honda Accord V6?

There is a specific procedure for setting valve clearance . I highly recommend getting a repair manual for the correct specs & procedure. The engine must be at TDC with the #1 cylinder on the compression stroke , that will allow you to adjust ONLY certain valves , then you have to turn the engine one turn to TDC again only now #1 will be on the exhaust stroke & the rest of the valves can be adjusted . it's important that you know the difference between the two !

What is the compression specs for a 2002 civic with a 1.7 liter engine

Doubt you will find that spec, easily anyway

How about doing a Cylinder Leak Down Test

Then you actually have a test that tells you something

Compression is relative to many conditions & not the
best test to do,initially, anyway

If the cylinders valves seal ,your done

You need 110 lbs or more across all cyl, with no
more than 10% difference

Don't forget the timing belt issues, you may have

Don't forget the old worn out & clogged exhaust converter

Don't forget the cam shaft oil passages that may be blocked
or cam actuators that fail

What is a compression check?

Checking the compression amounts to using a pressure measuring device either held and sealed by rubber gasket against the cylinder spark plug orfice, or could be threaded the same as your specific plug is. It is a measure of the compression pressure within your cylinder when it is on the compression stroke....meaning all valves closed and the cylinder going up toward the cylinder head resulting in compression. Reasons for low compression are worn piston rings, burnt or mis-adjusted valves, or could be a cracked cylinder wall, blown head gasket or a hole in a piston. Gasoline engines run much lower compression than diesels. For your compression pressure norm, Google in your engine or buy a service manual and it will have the specs in pounds per Sq. in.or PSI. Good Luck

Quit smoking

The newer engines are very critical to torque specs. If they were not torqued properly, even the slightest, you can have what is occurring. The older vehicles had much higher torque settings and this was hardly ever a problem.

Low compression cylinder

Time for a new car, unless you want to spend the big bucks to repair your engine. Low compression, below 100 psi, means the cylinder will not fire, will miss, have low power. The reason could be a blown head gasket, worn rings, valves not seating properly-at the very least, the cylinder head will have to come off. Before doing that, though, do a leak down test to pinpoint the cause of low compression in that cylinder. If just one cylinder is low, and you have good compression otherwise, it may be worth fixing. Tercels are low value beaters, but I owned a '94 tercel, and I loved it, till the engine went south, just like yours-body was too banged up to make it worth fixing, though.
