Speed Up Windows XP in 5 Steps

Most of the times we observe that our system seems to gradually slow down. Here below i am listing five basic and easy steps
that can help you speed up your Windows XP computer.

1. Clear the Prefetch Folder :The Prefetch Folder contains files that keep getting stored on your computer whenever you launch any program or application. Deleting these files clears up space on your system that might have caused the slow down. Here is how you need to go about it.
Click Start..click Run..type Prefetch and click ok. The prefetch folder will open up. Press Ctrl and A together. This highlights the entire contents of the folder. Press the Delete key on the keyboard and confirm the deletion. Once done close the prefetch folder window. Now right click on the recycle bin icon on the desktop and right click and select empty recycle
bin and then confirm the deletion.

2. Disable Startup Items: Certain programs get initiated in the background as soon as your system starts causing the system to slow down. These programs are actually not required on startup but because they get initiated it affects the system performance. Here below i am listing the steps to take care of this issue. Please note this step is very effective and
enhances your system startup speed significantly.
Click Start...click Run...type msconfig and click Ok.
The System Configuration utility window will open.
Click on the Startup tab on the top right. Click on the disable all button. Once done, in the list above, you will see many options with checkboxes. Please check any option that indicates your antivirus program software and internet service provider.
Click Apply and Ok. Please restart the system once.Once the system reboots you will get a message coming up saying "You have used the system configuration utility...." Please check the option below that says" Do not show this message again" and click OK.

3.Clear the Temporary Files Folder: Certain temporary files get created as a cache of our activity on the system. Clearing these files from time to time also improves the system speed. Below are the steps for the same.
Click Start..Click Run...Type %temp% and click Ok.The temporary files folder opens.Press Ctrl and A together. This highlights the entire contents of the folder. Press the Delete key on the keyboard and confirm the deletion. Once done close the folder window. Now right click on the recycle bin icon on the desktop and right click and select empty recycle bin
and then confirm the deletion.

4.Clear Cookies and Temp Internet Files: As you browse the internet the images of the pages you view get saved on the system occupying space on the system. Clearing these files increases your system performance while on the internet.
Open Internet Explorer. Click on the Tools menu on top right. Click Internet Options. Click on delete button to delete cookies, files and browsing history. Click Apply and Click Ok.

5.Scan our system for infection: Your system might run slow in case its infected with virus, spyware, malware, adware, trojans etc. Here below i am listing a tool that you can download and run on the system Its free of cost and is very effective. It scans your system and cleans up any infection. Click on the below link to download the tool. The link that opens up also has a tutorial on running the tool in case you face any difficulty.
Download Combofix Tool

With the above 5 steps, your system speed should surely get enhanced.

I have a NASCAR themed pc and although it runs fine it is very slow and it didn't used to be. I have cleaned out all the spyware and adware. I have checked and double checked for viruses. So far there is...

Hello,

As far as cleaning up the operating system, it sounds like you have already done mostly everything. I do have a completely free program that would take care of the last two things, system junk files, and registry errors.

Other than that, the one thing which would help the most is adding more memory to your PC. Would not cost much and is the easiest piece of hardware to install. Takes less than 5 minutes to do.

Thank you for choosing Fixya.

Download and run defraggler when you're done.

System run's real slow, how do i run and update/troubleshooter check

1st you should clean up the junk files on your hard drive. This can be done with the windows disk cleanup utility.(accessories->system tools folder in start menu)
2. Defragment the hard drive. (same place)
3. Go to http://www.ccleaner.com/ or some other registry cleaner site. Download the program and run it.
4. Run a virus scan.

If your computer is still slow you may consider getting some pc tuneup software that will do the three steps above and a few more things.

I think there are too many viruses.

What is happening to your computer? If it is slow, and has trouble running programs, you may have to clean your temp files. From your main screen, select start, from here you will see, on the lower right side of that window, a item that says "Run". Select that. When that opens up, type in the following----

%temp%

This will open another window that will show you files that are saved into the temporary folder in your computer. Make sure that all programs are shut off, then go up to the "EDIT" tab, select all, then hit delete selected. This should eliminate any problems with the slowing of your computer. Do this once a week, every time you get on the internet, or do work on the computer, it stores a temp file of what you have done, Yahoo Messenger also seems to add a plethora of files into this when it opens. If you clean this file up on a weekly basis, you shouldn't have too many problems.

If you do have some persistent problems, try Webroot Anti-Virus/Spyware program.. it is the best i have ever used...
