Having same problem in St. Louis - U61 Error Message; have even tried disconnecting power supply.

Have exactly the same problem as you have described, except this is the third time it has happened to my unit. Fixed twice by repairer whilst under warranty, now out of warranty and it is still broken. Have tried powering down the unit and rebooting but to no avail. Have approached Panasonic who have offered an out of service warranty claim procedure but they will not commit in a dollar amount how much they may assist me in my repair bill or if they will assist me at all with my repair bill. It's all a bit of pie in the sky assistance by Panasonic

I have the same problem with DMR-ES35V giving the u61 error message. Then it ejects the CD tray and powers itself off automatically. The only solution I have so far is I have already bought a SONY replacement. This one was only one month past the 1 yr. warranty period That is just not acceptable that things are only made to last one year. I contacted Panasonic who agreed to ship it to Indiana or somewhere for $130 plus parts. I then had a Sears repair store send it to try for $29.95 minimum... they sent it back and said it needed a new hard drive... approx $370. That's why I bought a competitor's. I still need this one fixed if the hard drive is not fried.

The manual refers to the U61 as being a recovery mode. Have you left it at U61 for a period of time while it tries to recover?
U61 ≥There was a power failure or the AC plug was disconnected while the unit was on. The unit is
carrying out its recovery process. This process restores the unit to normal operation. The unit is not
broken. Wait until the message disappears.
You could always try to force it into standby mode and back out again:
Press [í/I, POWER] on the main unit to switch the unit to standby.
Now press [í/I, POWER] on the main unit again to turn the unit on.
If that doesn't take care of it, everything thing I've found points toward a replacement of components inside the system by a repair service. Hopefully you are still under warranty!

U61 is a common fault in the Panasonic DVD recorders. It is generally a failure of the DVD-RAM drive and/or the digital controller board (in some cases it is both and both must be replaced together as a module). Unfortunately these are not repairable at individual component level; they would most likely need to be replaced and fitted by a qualified technician in an authorised Panasonic service centre. The only trouble here is the potential cost(s) involved (such as labour, the DVD drive, etc) - could be expensive and/or uneconomical. However, you can always submit your unit to a repair shop for a quote and a second opinion (on the costs of the replacement part(s) as well as estimated labour charges and the extent of the problem - this allows you to make an informed decision afterwards to get this fixed, but it is up to you.

The cost of a new DVD-RAM drive (if that is the actual problem, and not the board it is connected to) is quite high; anywhere between $130 US (for XVY1961 to suit DMR-ES35V/DMR-EZ47V models) up to $450 AU for the same device plus labour costs should you choose to have it replaced.

I assume you like your unit and want it working properly. If you do decide to deal with an authorised Panasonic service centre, ensure that when the work is completed they provide a detailed report, and some sort of warranty on that repair, especially if it involved replacing the DVD drive. Unless you have an extended manufacturer's warranty on this; which means it won't cost you anything to have it assessed and repaired fully.

Error code U61 on a panasonic DMR-ES35v

component failure, the DVD Disk Drive Control Board
(Part No. VEP79132).

Panasonic will not sell this individual part but packages it a module, called the RAM/Digital PCB Module
(Part No. RFKNES15P).
