Question about Brother MFC 8820D All-In-One Laser Printer
Looks like we have exactly the same problem with our Brother 8820D (8820DN) that you seem to have fixed. Three questions:
Did your symptoms also include papers jamming in the ADF about halfway, generally sticking on the white-pad underbelly of the ADF?
If so, did replacing the hinge address that problem as well?
Where and how did you obtain the replacement hinge?

The ears broke off my hinge and caused the whole ADF unit to sit way up off the scanner bed. As a workaround, I took out the 2 caps and springs so that the lid would close. There is no dampening and probably poor alaignment but it does sheet feed and will copy from the bed as well. I am going to order the hinge.

I too had a hinge problem with my brother 8220dn and i got the part from a third party (cannot remember the name). if you can replace a faucet washer it is just about as difficult. if you own this printer and the hinge has not broken be sure to life the cover from the middle because the torsion is what causes the hinge to break. nito

I had a broken left hinge in Sept 2006. I called
Brother International at 800-284-4357, Option 1, then 2. I ordered the
left hinge - Part No: LP-2403001 - described as ADF Hinge Assembly
(left). If you broke the right hinge, the part number may differ
slightly, but person on phone should be able to assist. It cost me
$11.55 including shipping.

To answer Meyerson's questions:
My symptoms did not include papers jamming in the ADF -- in fact, the ADF didn't work at all due to the broken left hinge. :( Also, I don't recall having any unusual problems with the ADF jamming frequently before the hinge broke to the point where the ADF didn't work at all.
I obtained the replacement ADF left hinge assembly by searching online for a parts dealer. I believe I ended up ordering the part from Precision Roller.
