Question about Panasonic DMR-EH55 DVD Recorder/HDD Recorder

Pansonic DMR-EH55 DVD Recorder,

Hey Guys, Over night i was copying 2movies from my DVD recorders HDD to DVD. When i woke up i noticed the Player turned off. I took the disk out and found thet only 1cm of Data was recorded. Now ehen i turn mu machine on i get the followiung messege: "There may be a problem with the Disc, Press ENTER, Then the unit turns to standby, and starts disk recovery after restart." I do what it tells me, but i keep getting the same messege on startup. Wether i turn it off myself or not, it will automatic turn itself off anyway and do nothing. can someone please help me, Whats it mean?? and how i can fix it? Thank You This is really amazing, I've read posts all over the internet with this exact same problem. Burn doesn't complete and then the message: "There may be a problem with the Disc, Press ENTER, Then the unit turns to standby, and starts disk recovery after restart." which of course never goes away, then no discs of any kind will play. Hard resets do not work. I know this because I've just experienced this same problem 2 days ago with my DMR-EH75VS. Somebody has got to have a solution to this problem as epidemic as it is.

I don't quite understand what a drm disk is. Could you clarify?

  • ad104 Apr 01, 2008

I've tried several brands and types of recordable disks to no avail. The drive will not even play store bought DVD movies now.

  • ad104 Apr 01, 2008

If you're referring to the firmware for the DMR-EH75 (PANA_DVD.FRM), the procedure for installing the firmware is by CD, which of course will not work because the drive is unable to read disks.

  • ad104 Apr 01, 2008

To be a bit more clear about it, whenever the tray is opened and closed whether there's a disk or when empty, the dvd drive makes a clunking noise several times then does nothing.
The DVD disc indicator stays on even when the tray is empty.

First disconnect device from power outlet and connect it back after 10 minutes, this will reset the device and may fix the problem.
If it does not work you will need to reinstall the software.
As far as I know Panasonic does not distribute a firmware download for your model.
You can contact Panasonic and ask if they supply a firmware update for your device, or locate a service centre and have your firmware reinstalled.
Here you can contact Panasonic By mail

    By phone: 1-800-211-PANA (7262)

Here is service locator from Panasonic

When you cannot reinstall the firmware you need to have your system firmware reinstalled at a service shop, they can flash or write the HD image. This is what you usually do when device does condition does not allow firmware update because firmware is corrupted.

Are you sure is not just a problem of dirty lens, If the dvd electronically respond to remote and commands, but just does not read and write dvds, it is likely that is the lens.
In this case start cleaning the lens with the usual cleaner disk and solution. Do it a couple of times.
If it does not work you will need to open the case and clean the lens manually with cotton and solution.
    Here is the complete procedure.

If it still does not work, you will need to replace the laser lens pickup.

I am not there to check your dvd , try to understand if it is the firmware that is gone (device not responding/does not pass post test) or is just not reading/writing because there is a problem with the lens.

Well, I told you, ther is a major problem with the dvd hardware. The device need to be opened and serviced.
The fact that you saw on the Internet more people who fixed a device not reading dvd in an easy way does not mean anything. Easy fix for similar problem are hard reset (unplugging power), cleaner disk, and when there is the procedure, factory reset, I did not find any reset procedure for your Daewoo.
If you hear weird noises loading disks, this is usually associated of troubles with lens, or spindle motor or lens pickup tray and mechanics. If you have experience you can fix it yourself, opening it, testing the parts above, and servicing your own device. If not you nee do contact a service centre.
It is not a very complex job, but you do not have right know how, you can end up damaging the device beyond repair.
To give you an idea here is the procedure to service a dvd with mechanic troubles (your case could be similar).

In fixya we can help you either addressing you to information on your problem, as I am doing right now, or helping you in servicing your own machine.

In your case you may just have a dirty head, not necessarily hardware in need of replacement (unless the sound you hear is really unusual).
If you want follow up servicing the dvd, you should start opening the case and cleaning the lens manually with cotton and alcool or solution(again Here is the complete procedure.). If it does not work you will check lens, motor and mechanics, and we are here to help you.
If you do not feel like doing this initial maintenance, then you to find a service in your area.

All you can do apart servicing the device, which is probably what is needed, is contacting Panasonic by mail or By phone: 1-800-211-PANA (7262) and asking them if there is any factory reset procedure. It usually consists in pressing several keys when unit is in standby.

We have a Panasonic DMR-EH55 dvd recorder, it worked just fine until March, 2009 when Shaw quit subscribing to tv guide. Has there been any resolution to this issue?

Shaw like Time Warner in many areas of the U.S. will never go back to TV guide.
Your best bet is to switch to the competition in your area.

Recording from DVD recorder to disc

Christine,

1) Put a compatible DVD in the tray. (I have noticed that I must format DVD+R discs, but others are formatted okay for recording -- such as DVD-R and DVD RW)
2) Close the tray.
3) Make sure the player is set to HDD and not to DVD. It will indicate HDD, DVD, or SD on the LCD screen.
4) Using the remote press the "functions" button.
5) Select "copy" from the menu when it appears.
6) You will now see the list of programs you have recorded to the HDD. Highlight the one you want to copy and press "Enter" on the remote.
7) I think there are two confirmation screens that come up, press start or continue or whatever it says.
8) My recorder generally takes about 14 minutes at high speed to copy a two-hour program. If the program is longer than 2- hours, you must divide it into tow or more shorter segments for more than one DVD.
9) If you want to select several shorter programs (not to exceed 2-hours combined) highlight the programs individually pressing the PAUSE button on the remote. This places a check mark next to each of the programs. When you finish, press the enter button on the remote and go through the confirmations screens again.
10) If the DVD is nor rewritable, it will automatically run the "finalize" program. It takes about 3 minutes and runs after recording. This formats the DVD so that it can be played in non-Panasonic players. If it is a DVD-RW, they you must finalize it manually if you want to watch it on other types of players.

Hope this helps,

Nancy
