Freezer gets real hot

We had a electrical storm the other night. After this storm the freezer got real hot and melted all the food. It is like the defroster is staying on and the compressor is not kicking on.. What can I do?

It sounds like the defrost termination t/stat (located on the freezer coil) and the defrost timer have both been jammed on by the storm. A quick way to check is to locate the defrost timer (every model seems to locate it in a different position) look for a round plastic cover around 15mm diameter inside the fridge or freezer, remove the cover and rotate the timer clockwise until you hear a firm "click" then plug the fridge into the power & see if it starts (some defrost timers can also be located near the kick plate or near the compressor well) if the compressor starts (I'm such it will) replace both of these parts.

Cheers John.

Freezer not freezing

Sorry about the lightning storm that could be related. If the fridge side is still working then the compressor is still working that is the good news for the freezer to work you need a fan. The next thing to do is open the freezer door and hold the switch so the freezer thinks the door is closed. There should be a fan running. if the fan is running and blowing hot air. you will need a tech. If you do not hear a fan then start removing shelves and then the covers at the back wall of the freezer. when you find the fan you will need a tester to see if it has power. if it has power but will not turn replace it. Removing the covers will also give you a chance to see if the coils are cold. if they are good if they are hot not good. By coils I am talking about the ones inside not the ones out side (which need to be cleaned once a year).
Best of luck

where is the ice,is it on the food and shelves or is it on the back inside wall of the freezer?if it's on the back inside wall of the freezer you have a defrost problem, bad defrost thermostat, heater, timer or board depending on your model number,if it's on the shelves, door and food packages warm air is getting into the freezer somehow either from the door not closing or the door was left open, could have a bad gasket on the door, the ice chute door could be broke and not closing.let me know what you find and the picture shows a side by side but i'll need the model number too,if it's a side by side or freezer on the bottom the model number should be in the fridge section,on the right hand wall up near the ceiling,if the freezer is on top the number should be on the left side wall in the fridge section up near the ceiling.but with this hot wheather we're having if the door was left open this will happen, you can shut down the machine or unplug it,remove the food from the freezer and melt the ice with a hair dryer, don't do this with the machine running because the hot air will cause the same problem, after the ice is melted you can put the food back in and restart it.

My freezer frosted over everything because the door was not shut tight and now it will not clear.

take out all the food out of the freezer, unplug the fridge and get a hair dryer and start melting out all the ice in the freezer, then blow the hot air into the vent holes on the back wall until you don't see any more water dripping down through the slots in the back wall.turn the machine back on,open the fridge door after around 5 or 10 minutes and if you feel cold air blowing into the fridge you fixed the problem,if you don't feel cold air keep hitting the inside back wall with the hair dryer and keep blowing the hot air into the holes in the back wall.all that it does is the freezer gets cold and there's a fan behind the back wall in the freezer, the fan blows the cold air into the fridge side,if the air ducts are frozen the air can't circulate into the fridge section so you have to melt the ice out so the cold air can blow from the freezer to the fridge.good luck,if you have another fridge remove the food and unplug it and leave the doors open for a day and it will melt out.good luck

Fridge was left open last night all night long and now it will not work..please help it is not even 1 yr old.......

the air ducts are froze up,if you lost your food you can just unplug it and leave the doors open and let it melt out,or you can unplug it,remove everything out of the freezer, remove the back inside wall of the freezer and melt out all the ice that you see, then look at the right side in the back down at the bottom of the freezer there's an air duct there, melt that out and in the fridge section look to see if you can see any air ducts on the left hand side wall, blow hot air into any of the air ducts that you see, just watch out, don't keep the heat blowing on the ducts for to long, you can damage the inside of the ducts, there's styrofoam in them and the heat can damage it,good luck it might be best to just let it melt out on it's own

One year old Maytag refrigerator with bottom freezer. We noticed recently that water accumulates and freezes at the bottom of the freezer under the basket. We don't notice it then when there is enough...

The drain to the bottom is plugged. you will need to completely defrost the unit. The way I do this is to take all the frozen food out and either put into a different freezer or pack all the frozen food real tight in a cooler then use a hair dryer (under constant supervision) to melt all the ice in the bottom. use towels to soak up all the water. after all the ice is melted you should be able to see the drain. this is where the melted ice drains when the unit goes into the defrost cycle. I have used some small amount of hot tap water to clear the drain and once in a while you need to actually push something thru the tube(compressed air or flexable wire) to clear out a blockage (paper, small piece of food or chunk of ice).. Be extra carefull not to crack the plastic with anything sharp or by using to much force. Once the tap water goes down into the very bottom (thru the drain tube into the catch pan) then the ice won't form as the defrost cycle will put the water clear down to the catch pan. sometimes even a scumy mold build up will block the drain. Get the drain as clean as possible and you may need to keep an eye on it so it doesn't become blocked again. After you clear the drain close the freezer and let it cool down before you put the frozen food back into the freezer.

Freezer door was left open, now after one day freezer is not cold

you can unplug it and let it defrost on it's own or you can melt out the air ducts, you'll have to shut down the freezer, remove the shelves and remove the inside back wall of the freezer section and melt out all the ice in the right hand corner and any ice on the coil.when melting out the air ducts be careful not to damage any of the plastic or styrofoam on or inside the wall, heat up the area with a hair dryer for a couple of minutes and then move to the coil, after a minute or two go back the the air duct, when you think it's melted out enough turn the freezer back on and with your hand check to make sure the air is blowing into the fridge side,if you can feel air blowing then your all set,if there's any ice left in there the defrost will take care of it.if you have another fridge to put your food in or if the food can't be refrozen i'd just unplug it and let it melt out on it's own over night and you can clean it out while everything is out of it.let me know how you make out and good luck, hope you didn't loose that much food

HOW DO I DEFROST FREEZER

Hi,

Most modern freezers don't need to be defrosted, but should be washed out and cleaned periodically. Following are steps for defrosting freezers that need it -generally when ice builds up to a thickness between 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch.

  1. Step 1 Turn the freezer off. Controls may be inside the refrigerator.
  2. Step 2 Remove all food from the freezer and store in an ice chest while you are defrosting.
  3. Step 3 Remove ice in the freezer compartment. This can be done by: a) letting the freezer door stand open until ice melts; b) putting a pan of hot water in the freezer compartment and closing the door, then checking for melting ice and reheating the water every 10 to 15 minutes; c) using a hair dryer by aiming warm air at ice in freezer until it melts.
  4. Step 4 Pick up ice and water as it melts with a dishcloth or sponge and deposit into sink.
  5. Step 5 Use a sponge or dishcloth and a bowl of warm water to thoroughly wipe out inside of freezer once the freezer is cleared of ice.
  6. Step 6 Turn the freezer back on, close the door and let run for 10 to 15 minutes before returning food to the freezer.
  7. Step 7 Put food back into freezer and close the door.

American fridge/freezer, over the last week the freezer compartment has melted ice? Today decided to remove all food from the freezer compartment - cleaned it out leaving the freezer and fridge...

  • yes, refrigerators have heaters in them to defrost the buildup of frost around the coils
  • they defrost approx. every 12-16 hours
  • if the defrost cycle gets stuck then it will continue to heat
  • i have seen it melt the plastic inside the refrigerator

  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad thermo switch in freezer
  • i would replace both as they are not expensive
