Question about G-Technology (913003-01) 500 GB FireWire 400 (1394a) Hard Drive
I recently bought a 500 gb G-Drive Q external HD, and it was working fine up until recently.
The story is that I realized I had to bring my MacBook Pro into London Drugs in order to have a the dvd drive replaced. So I decided it was time to buy an external HD just in case. I bought it and things were normal until I tried moving things onto it.
Some things will transfer and others won't. Every so often, when I tried to move a file onto the G-Drive, the error "The operation cannot be completed because the item... is in use" occurs (it happens moreso with pictures and media files). Yet no applications are open, and when I try moving files from the other Mac desktops in my house onto the G-Drive, I never encounter this issue. The only way I moved most of my files onto it was by using these other computers. My MacBook is barely 2 years old and the dvd drive was the first servicing it has had. Now I just got it back, try to add some stuff to the external HD and I run into this problem again. Sometimes it's with singular files, sometimes its with entire folders (example would be a file of pictures, but I've had it happen with media files such as movies which were not in use and on a dvd).
It is frustrating to say the least; what's the point in having it if most of the files I now try transferring onto it will not move because they're supposedly "in use"? I would like to know if I'm addressing this to the right people, or should I be concerned about the problem being one to do with my MacBook and not the G-Drive?
Another issue I ran into. I noticed after I put everything I intended to on the G-Drive, the first time I connected it to my MacBook with all the files freshly backed-up it said that there was nothing in most of those folders, excluding a few. I was livid of course, so I connected to the other Macs in my house and everything was normal. I returned to my MacBook and it was like nothing happened, all the files were there, yet I was still having the problem I detailed in the first paragraph.
Any answers or discussion on this would be greatly appreciated by me.

SOURCE: I purchased a G/Drive Mini
It sounds like it could be either the controller board, or the drive itself. Since the drive eventually locks up your system, I tend to believe that the hard drive is the problem. You will need to send it in for replacement, you can find the RMA request form here: http://www.g-technology.com/Support/Support.cfm?Loc=Tsupport.

Testimonial: "Thanks for the info. I'll get in touch with the G-drive guys."
Since the drive crashed in the middle of a data transfer it probably has a damaged directory. Try connecting the drive to your Mac and run DiskWarrior on the drive to repair the directory and allow the drive to mount.
