Usually when this happens the antenna wire connections have come dislodged. Did you put this in recently? Has the laptop been dropped? The internal antenna wires snap onto this type of internal wireless card and not always snap on secure. THat would be the 1st thing to check.

When you look at available networks, how many do you see? Are you connected to the strongest one? Do you have any other wireless devices that connect to that router? When did this start happening?

    Can't start my wireless modem

I think the problem is you cannot connect to the internet wirelessly using your laptop. The problem may lie in the modem or in the laptop itself.
First you need to isolate the problem. That is, determine if the laptop or your modem is the one that has the problem. If you can connect to the internet using your laptop in someone elses home network or free wifi outside your home, then the problem is your modem. BTW, modems don't have the capability to connect wireless devices to the internet. You need a wireless router. If what you have is a router, you're on the right track.
If your laptop can detect your home network, try connecting to it. If you're getting an error, call your Internet Service Provider. They should be able to help you fix the problem. Also, try updating the driver of your laptop's wireless card. You can do this by hardwiring your laptop onto your router, go to device manager, right click on your wireless card, then hit update driver. If nothing works, call your laptop's OEM.

Wireless zero configuration is the feature of Windows XP that allows Windows to detect the available wireless networks and automatically connect to the most preferred wireless network.

It is enabled by the Wireless Zero Configuration service in Windows XP. It provides auto wireless network detection when you switch on the computer.
Follow the steps below to verify that the service is running:
    1. Go to Start and right click My Computer. Select and click Manage.
    2. Computer Management window will appear. Under Services and Applications, select Services.
    3. Check for the service Wireless Zero Configuration. Make sure that it is started and that the startup type is set to automatic.
computer-management.jpg4. If it isn't, double-click the service. If the startup type is not set to automatic, click on the dropdown arrow and and change it to automatic. Click OK at last.
autostart-wireless-zero.jpgIf your wireless adapter driver does not support wireless auto onfiguration, you will notice the following:
    - The network adapter does not appear as a wireless network adapter in Network Connections. It appears as a LAN adapter, similar to an Ethernet connection.
    - The properties of the wireless connection do not have a Wireless Networks tab.
    - You do not receive a Windows XP notification bar message indicating that wireless networks are available.
To get the most out of your Windows XP wireless experience, you should contact wireless adapter manufacturer to obtain the latest version of the drivers that support this XP feature.
If not, you must manually configure wireless network settings using the configuration software supplied with the wireless network adapter.

For you to use the modem direct - you may need drivers - BUT connecting to a router does not require any drivers - and you should just be able to plug in and go If wireless - then you may need to provide the wireless security key if the wireless is secure - and if the wireless is on the same SSID name as before that may cayse a problem - but you can renove the xp wireless profiles to overcome that Wireless Profiles

    - delete the preferred networks start>control panel>network connections> right click on the wireless connection listed wireless networks tab in the preferred network list click on each one and - remove button you will then have to enter the wireless security key for any networks you connect to
If on a LAN connection - you may need to turn off the modem/router and PC - then turn on the modem - allow to settle and all the light to show normal status - turn on router and do the same then turn on the PC

Where is the switch or function key combination to turn on wireless connection?

It's difficult to tell, but there seems to be a small switch on the front, that may activate the wireless connection. If that isn't it, you can usually access the modems through control panel, under 'network and internet,' and the wireless assistant, or possibly the network and sharing center; if the wireless modem is disabled, right clicking on the icon will usually give you an option to activate it, or you can connect to a network through the network and sharing center, as well as detecting networks, and that will tell you whether or not the thing is working.

    No internet connections found

First, you need to be sure that the wireless networking adapter is enabled.

    1. From the Start menu, click Control Panel.

    2. In Control Panel, click Network Connections.

    3. Check the status of Internet Connection and Local Area Connection that indicates WIRELESS (it's most likely a Broadcom product).
    4. If either item says disabled or not connected, right click and select ENABLE from the menu.
    5. Close all open dialog boxes and windows.
    6. Use the Windows XP Wireless Zero Configuration, located in the system tray at the bottom of your screen, to test the adapter.
    7. Double-click the icon with one monitor and 3 wave lines on the right side. Your network should be detected.
If that doesn't pan out, post back and I'll give you Plan B.
