1975 whirpool washer

The washer will not spin. its a belt driven machine with a one piece agitator. How in the world do you remove it. It looks like a special tool is needed to do such.

hi..thanks for answering, but what I am asking is how to remove the agitator itself. I have done some troubleshooting with the local service techs here in town and they think its the motor coupling causing the basket not to spin during the rinse/spin cycle, but I have to remove the agitator first in order to remove the basket and take a peek at the coupling. I have gotten so far in the agitator removal as to have one nut and then another bolt the nut was attached to removed. However I cannot get the one piece agitator to pull out. there does not appear to be any reason why it will not budge. And I am wondering if there is some trick to this.

I had the same problem with my Kenmore belt drive washer. The agitator was completely stuck. Two guys reaching in and pulling on the agitator merely lifted the whole machine off the floor.

I took a bicycle tube and wrapped it around under the agitator. The tube I used was a 26" diameter, much larger than the diameter of the agitator so I wrapped it around twice. I tucked it in until only the valve was sticking out. I then took my bicycle pump and after a few strokes, pop, off came the agitator. It only took a few pounds of pressure in the tube.

This problem is usually caused by the wig-wag not functioning. There are ele celinoids on it and they go bad. If the washer agitates properly but you just dont get the spin cycle, its probably the wig-wag. You can look up the part on sears parts site and see if it is still available or obsolete.

On the old generation of whirlpool washers. There is no coupler, this is only on the newer direct drive platform, so dont worry about the coupler. To get the agitator off I used to use my pants belt. Feeding it underneath as close to center as possible and pulling up like crazy. Just beware, it may pop up quickly and may hit you in the face. Again, if your unit is belt driven, there is no coupler. If you look in the back assess panel you can identify the wig wag. I always pull down the cellinoid during the spin cycle and see if that forces the unit to spin.

Whirpool imperial series will agitate but will not do spin cycle

If that is the old belt driven modle I would check the lid switch. If it is bad then no power will get to the wig-wag and the transmission will not be shifted. If the switch is fine check for corrosion on the shift pins or an open wigwag coil. The wig wag has 4 wires. 2 white wires that are common AND 2 other wires for wash and spin. A neat trick is to swap the 2 control wires and see if it washes in spin and spins in wash. That way you can determine if the wig wag coil is bad.
If the washer is a newer model without a belt I would say your lid switch is bad.

Agitator does not rotate during washing , but rotates during spin dry

Is the agitator a back and forth or does it only agitate in one direction. While it is spinning if the agitation mechanism is broken the agitator will spin with the speed of the bowl and just freewheel. you need to look to see if it is a belt driven agitator, if it is buy a belt for your model number of your washer and find someone handy to fit it if you cant yourself. If it is mechanical agitator chances of fixing it yourself are slim. Weigh up the cost of parts and labor as well as call out fee for the repair man and check if its easier and cheaper to just get a new washer.

My washer tub nor the agitator spin or rotate you can hear a whining n grinding noise

whining and grinding most likely mean belt or coupler is binding or broken away unplug unit and open access panel or [remove water first]lay on side and access motor from bottom if belt driven check belt if frayed or broken replace-if has coupler [looks like a star shaped hard rubber /plastic piece between motor and trans] if broken pieces on floor or shredded replace- part's can be bought online-appliance stores coupler not expensive and both parts easy replacement good luck

GE WASHER WJSR4160GWW Won't Agitate

Sounds like tub belt failure. Check online for model layout. If unit is belt driven, remove back panel to access internal works. Look for broken belt. Depending on setup, control system stuck on water pump. Else possible control panel failure or motor (if water pump separate).

Can heat motor , washer will not spin or agitate

If this washer is belt driven, the belt could have slipped off or broke. To check this you can tilt the washer forward and look under it. If you can't see it there it maybe covered and you will have to take the front off. If this is the case it will cost a lot less to fix it yourself. And it is pretty easy.

Washer won't spin

You may not have received any response because you have used Kenmore 22622 category instead of posting with GE and the GE model #.
Regardless - you might remove the back panel of the machine and with adequate light peer inside and look for a belt. If your machine is belt driven, it may need a replacement if it has stretched beyond the limits imposed by any tensioner.
