Stored Data Lock-Up In A Single Contacts File

Here's A Problem You Probably Don't See Much Of If Ever...

Concerning My Sharp ZR-5800 Zaurus pda > My data locked-up on me a week ago...

More correctly & specifically, I am locked-out of my contacts file > Not sure why since I still have un-used memory > However, my colleague mentioned that I may have too much data stored into a single file, the contacts file, causing a data lock-up...

Did try re-booting by removing & replacing the batteries, but that didn't work > Of course I could re-set the unit but that would delete all stored data.

Does anyone out there know a trick or code to un-locking this unit???

This pda unit is not locked-up due to a secrete location or password...

Any Help Or Assistance Would Be Greatly Appreciated.........

If you can attach device to a computer, you might want to try RECUVA, save all data to some where else on your computer, hard reset, and move data back file by file.

It is quite difficult to understand the problem, as you keep rejecting all answers immediately. In this way no expert is going to follow you in troubleshooting your problem. Many expert will just post a single sentence etc.

In all the confusion generated by your misuse of Fixya I understood you have passworded unrecoverable Data (lost password) or corrupt Data. If this is the situation what you need to do is saving a backup of your contacts into a computer, reset the machine to factory as posted, then restore all your data.
A reset had already been suggested, I am sure you would have got to this same point dialoguing whith experts proposing this solution.
Refuse what you want but this is what you need to do.Save a backup, restore to factory, restore your files from backup.
Here is the manual
Follow instruction from manual to connect to computer and save your data. You can also connect wirelessly.
I hope you find a better way to interact proficiently with experts next time you use Fixya.

Best regards

One last thing, depending on which data you cannot access, it can also be a faulty flash memory card.
Read the card using a computer with card reader (or use external usb card reader) and test it.

Did you connect to computer to do backup as suggested?

Data is not locked, standing on your description your PDA is freezing up when you try acessing contacts, that means data is defective, not locked. You need to connect to PC, is only possible way to recover your data from home. Did you try connecting to computer, and seeing if computer can backup contacts?

A defective static memory, like the one inside your PDA works similarly to a defective hard disk, depends on where is the problem, usually if you cannot even see data you will not be able to recover it without using special tools like this

File Recovery SoftwareAnd even using the software usually you cannt recover data or have only a partial recover.
If the lost data is valuable enough, and you do not have a copy, a way to proceed may be by contacting a data recovery company in your area, like this one here: http://www.datarecoverycorp.co.uk/%3Fsou...">Data Recovery In UK.
Try finding one that apply no fix no fee principle. The do not always work.

First thing to do: try using cable and only software provided for connecting Sharp PDA to computer without any additional software. If it works you will have a working backup of your PDA data on your pc.

Hi,

Correct me if i am wrong. All you need is the important contact detail files and other things from your memory card. Then why don't you use this memory card on your laptop. If you have a card reader reader on your laptop insert the card in it and transfer the file using THIS SOFTWARE

Then once you get them back on your laptop just format your card and transfer the contact files on it again.

Well this is the only solution i believe. If you still face the problem you will have to contact the customer support of your product about this problem.

Goodluck,
Please don't forget to rate the solution

Are you contacts stored on the memory card or in the unit's internal memory?

You should be able to explore the file structue of the PDA from Windows when it is connected to a PC. I beleive you can explore the PDA in ActiveSync. Browse through the stucture, you should be able to find your contacts file(s), not sure exactly where you would find it I don't have a PDA with me to check.

Once you find to file, you should be able to see if it's set to "read only" or if anything else looks funny about the file.

What exactly comes up on the screen when you try to access your contacts? What kind of error or indication do you get that tells you your file it too big or locked up?

Try turning off unit, remove battery and memory card then after 30mins-an hour reinstall memory card and battery. turn unit back on.

Try resetting unit as well without any card/ use a different card while resetting the unit.

Hi
Was the backed up version of the address book openable by WinXP or one of its programmes? If it was you may be able to run WinXP as a virtual machine on Win8.1, otherwise you need to find a programme which will open the address book file or import it in a form that makes sense. This may not be easy !
Hope this is helpful, if so would you please register that with Fixya

I lost my old Sharp Zaurus ZR 3000 K-PDA data when I changed its memory battery. The Zaurus software disks (Win. 95) were useless after I moved up to WinXp, and now are lost. Any idea how could I transfer...

It was ages ago I used my ZR5800. Looks like the 3000.
I only have the device and some old flash cards. Most of my data was coppied to the flashcards. I lost my manual, but I'm sure you could connect by infra red to a laptop. or another IR device.
The flashcards worked in the old laptops, so if you have an old laptop, check if you can put the flashcards in and if you can connect via IR.

I installed replacement batteries with the polarity reversed. Since then unit does not display the Contact file, but all other functions (activities, data files, etc.) seem unimpaired. Any ideas? I...

Hi, well the reason this has happened is that these contacts are stored in battery backed up NVRAM, now this RAM is very sensitive to polarity reversal, and also due to the way it works, doesn't have polarity reversal protection, on that circuit. So when you reversed those batteries even though the reverse polarity protection saved the Unit as a whole, the NVRAM would have been destroyed or wiped at best. These is no real way of replacing this NVRAM, I guess you could send it back to the factory though and ask for a "Quote" with view to the repair.

Sharp wizard. Batteries dead. can you retrieve information???

Depends. The Wizards had backup battery. As long as it is still good, then your data is safe. if you saved / copied / made backups to the compact flash card (Type 1 option) as well, then you have a copy there that you might be able to use in a computer. Sharp used a different, not quite proprietary, format for storing data though. You may be able to see the data on the computer, but won't be able to open the individual files.

If your backup battery is dead, and the main batteries are dead, and you don't have backups on CF, then your data is likely gone.
