Drum symptoms? Hi Tryit, The drum reset went just as you said - thank you! It worked on the first try. Now, 1 more question. How will I know when the drum really needs replaced. Will it lose copy quality, will it make a weird sound, etc.? thanks!

My XD125F just started printing indecipherable streaked lines where the text should go. What is a drum reset and do you think it would solve my problems? On a related note, when does it become cost-ineffective to repair a printer this old?

Most likely you will start to get streaking. The cleaning blade will finally fail.

That drum is pretty resiliant. I doubt the quality would fade in the next 18,000 pages.

I think I would replace it after that.

To save yourself money use this business to buy it from. Great people to deal with.

My Oki C5650 is showing all 4 3rd party cartridges as incompatible.

For the printer to do this of its own accord makes me think the main board has thrown a wobbly. As you know how to get into the maintenance mode, scroll to menu reset and this will reset the eeprom. I doubt if it will cure it without new drums. You can buy on the internet a stick-on fuse for the drum which will blow and reset the printer into thinking its a new drum. Do this for all the drums and it may just do the trick. If its toner related then only genuine toners will cure. Anyway the fuse trick is the cheapest option. You may think why drums when its toners. That's because you need to fool the printer into thinking parts have been changed and it may have a knock on effect. Its worth a try.

Hi, I have a Workcenter XD102. It gives me a J2 error. I don't know how to fix it. Please help. Thank you very much, Charles

J2 error for Workcenter XD102 indicates a Drum Cartridge Problem sensed by the main PWB indicating that the Drum cartridge had reached its end of life. You may replace the Drum cartridge with a brand new Drum Cartridge. This should fix the problem.
If you believe that its not the Drum cartridge with or without replacing the Drum cartridge, you may try to open the printer, make a good clean and perform the below. 1. Check the PWB and Drum Cartridge Reset Circuit for any loose connection and short circuit. You may re-seat the cables and terminations and test. 2. If that didn't work you might need to get some voltage from the Drum Cartridge Reset Circuit as per below. 2a. If voltage is more than 0.5 VDC measured between PJ CN116-2 and GND then you need to replace the Drum Cartridge Reset Switch PL x.x. 2b. If voltage is less than 0.5 VDC measured between PJ CN116-2 and GND then actuate the Drum cartridge Reset Switch. Then check the voltage if its +5 VDC measured between PJ CN116-2 and GND. i. If not then replace the Drum Cartridge Reset Switch PL 5.. ii. Else it should be fine. iii. If not then replace the Main PWB, PL 7.1.

The 42V printer has no head, as it is a drum printer, so the little numbers that print are on a small rotary drum that you can see spinning around while it prints. Whenever I have tried to obtain parts in the past, I have always been told that you just buy the whole printer, and believe me , it's worth it. They are almost impossible to work on, as they have so many tiny fiddly parts. You usually end up breaking the printer while trying to get it apart. The printer is usually not too expensive, and when the drum is worn, the rest of the parts are usually on the way out as well. They are considered to be a consumable part of the machine with a limited lifetime, as these basic registers are not expected to last more than a few years.

Do you know that the fault is definitely in the drum? There are other issues with these that can be fixed without dismantling the printer. If you let me know the symptom, I might be able to help further.

As posted by Songdancer - this solution worked for my HL-1440 to reset the drum light

"Brother's webpage says to reset the drum counter. On some models this is done by opening up the front door, pressing the GO button until all 4 lights are lit, then releasing the GO button"

Reset drum continued...

The flag should be up. When it first turns on it will engage and move to the down position. It moves from top to bottom to swipe the reset. switch.
Since Xerox doesn't want anyone to know this. I can't find any pics of how it sets up.
Wish I did. That way when I do it I could remember exactly myself, It's pretty mush a hit and miss thing.
