Question about Video Game Consoles & Games

1 Answer

Hi, I have been trying to get the cpu and gpu to overheat wit out sucess. The reason I am trying to do that is due to the red circle of death, I have taken the console apart (it was out of waranty) and cleaned the morherboard, fixed the cpu and gpu with new thermal paset and made the nessesary changes to tighten the heatsinks. However, when i start the console i get the 3 red lights and they do not go from 3 to 2 indicating that that the console is overheated. I have another Xobx 360 that is wite and i had the same problem, using the same method i fixed it but it's not working on the elite black version. Please advise. Kind regards, Helgi

Hello

Hold down the Sync controller button on the console and then press on the eject button, do this 4 or 5 times, this will give out a secondary error code.

1 red light = 1 2 red lights = 2 3 red lights = 3 4 red lights = 0
The code has 4 digits.

for example 0022

Please post me the code and we will go from there.

should i plug in the fan and put the xbox back together or should i do the test with the console dismateled?

  • Ekse May 16, 2010

You can read the code along as the console powers on and displays the 3 red lights, on the motherboard in the front are the two buttons that you are supposed to press, the One near the dotter board (which shows the 3 red lights) and the other where the drive is supposed to be at.

Pressing down the Sync and then pressing on the eject button should change the 3 error lights into something else, then press again to change to the next digit, and again. until you get back to the original 3 red lights.

    OK, got it.

    the code is 0031

    Please advise.

Unknown: could be caused by a short between the heatsink and surrounding capacitors

Release the heat sinks, they are possibly too tightly on, have you done a Xclamp replacement? Xclamp replacement bends the board and can ruin the console.

Try removing the heat sinks, you should get 2 red lights, overheating almost instantly, if you still get 3 red lights constantly there must be a short somewhere.

    Hi again,

I get two lights like it's overheating, what should I do next? try to put the damned thing back together?

  • Ekse May 16, 2010

Okay, it seems like you had the heat sinks on too tightly, put the heat sinks back but don't tighten too much, if the issue of 0031 comes back again, release the screws slightly.

Or are you using the original xclamps? did you check if the plastic part on the bottom has fallen out? If the metallic xclamp in the bottom is touching directly to the board its going to cause such a problem, make sure the plastic is there so that the metal is not touching the components.

then see if the console turns on normally, you don't need to put it back together completely until it works.

I have remowed the X clamps and am useing bolts.

    i have a new error code 1022

  • Ekse May 16, 2010

Okay, the 0031 was a short, now we are back at the original problem, the RROD, overheat the console, disconnect the fan power cable from the board and let it overheat until the 2 red lights come, let them flash for a minute or two, then turn off the console and turn it back on, if you get normal operation, then reconnect the fan power cable.

Repeat the overheating if the issue is not solved, no need to let it cool down. if you are applying too much pressure the the gpu / cpu with the heatsinks, you may have to remove the bolts and just let the heatsinks sit on top of the parts, this will allow the soder to relocate to where its supposed to be, too much pressure will make it less likely to happen.
