Question about Dyson DC04 HEPA Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum

1 Answer

I have a Dyson DC04 which is making a strong burning smell within a few seconds of switching on. Is this likely to be the motor and if so can it be replaced?

More likely it is the beater brush which is jammed and not turning. Turn the machine over and remove the bottom plate. Unhook the drive belt, then try to turn the beater brush--it is likely bound up with string, thread, and hair. Try turning the machine on once--if the motor spins and makes vacuum, it is probably ok. Remove the brush assembly and clean it of debris. Clean the end bearings with a Q tip and WD40 oil, then wipe clean with another Q tip. Oil the bearings with 3-1 or other light oil. Check the belt for a badly burned area--replace if necessary. Slide the new belt over the brush and motor shaft, then drop the brush with bearings into the case, and check rotation. If ok, replace the plate and test on your floor. Hope this helps!

My Dyson dc14 vacuum is making flapping noise and loosing power, strong burning smell

If the air flow is blocked, then yes you will get overheating of the motor and a funny smell. One approach is to remove the part closest to the motor, and if the motor then runs okay, the blockage must be downstream. Perhaps there is an online manual that explains how it comes apart? Another thought is that the bearings might be going bad. Might be worth taking this vacuum to a repair man.

Dyson dc04 my dyson dc04 wont turn on at all, it was working yesturday and now its just not switching on please can anyone help?

Follow the power from the plug to the switch through the vacuum until you reach the motor. Somewhere along the path you will likely find the problem. The most common problem is the cord or switch.

The vaccum dyson 04 has a smell of burning

well there are a few versions of the dc04 what i would do first is clean out the filter and let it dry out completely for 24 hours. then i would turn the vacuum upside down and look at the roller brush. if there is a lot of hair or debris it would cause a burning smell. so clean all of that out. after that the only other thing that it could possibly be would be the belt or the clutch. you know you have a clutch if you can turn the roller on and off for bare floor and carpets. if the roller is continuously rotating then i would check the tension of the belt and for any rubber shavings. if its really loose or you do see shavings then yes you need to replace it. now if you do have a clutched system you will need to take it in and have your clutch replaced. the clutch and labor cost about $100

Dyson animal stopped working and produced a strong smell as if something had burnt out. What could it be and could it be repaired?

a strong burning smell would suggest an electrical burnout of some kind. could be wiring, switch or motor.
new motors are available for around £35 on ebay. switches are available as well. wire is readily available.
the machine would have to be stripped to find where the problem is (and the cause) and to make sure that there is no heat damage to the casing
it is not a difficult job to do, but i would leave it to a qualified electrician due to the mains electricity.
i have no idea what the electrician would charge in your area.

hope this helps

Check mains lead where it enters machine very common for internal fracture.

To prove this try waggling lead with machine switched on if it starts & stops this is the fault.
