Have you let the machine complete the install? There are a couple of reboots with the disk installed. Don't press any buttons during the reboot the disk will transfer to the harddrive when appropriate.

You also may have a corrupt boot record. Next time try booting from the CD. When the system comes up, select recovery console (R). When you are asked for a system to login, press enter. Enter the administrator's password if asked. At the prompt, "c:\windows>", type fixmbr.

GX620 Dell, will not boot, 3 green steady lights and power lite, usb light....when i power on, it looks at the hard drive, then stops. monitor has blinking cursor...no bios comes up, and cannot access...

Does anything ever post to the lcd screen when you press the power button to boot it? Does it every show you things like which key to hit to get into the Bios or System Setup?

I think you have a corrupt or missing boot file or system file. The blinking cursor is indicative of that. Try running the Check Disk Utility from your XP CD.

To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc ora operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot fromit. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with whiteletters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice thepercentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run tocompletion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows.Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair whenthe options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recoveryconsole and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.

I am trying to install win xp on a dell optiplex 760, but it can't seem to boot from the cd even after I set the boot options to boot from cd. It also can't read the boot files from the usb flash...

unless the usb drive is formatted correctly the computer will not see the files as a bootable directory. if the cd is not reading try usig an external drive or loading the disc into another computer and see if it works.

Need the setup disc... it's asking for set up disc. Said my Config system is corrputed

You can try to reinstall windows with any cd ( if XP ) go trough the installation process and carefully see it will ask you if you want to repair the windows twice the first time the answer is not the second time if you say yes it will reinstall windows but that will not damage any of you settings.
if you are brave you can also boot with win xp cd and try to repair the boot sector.
boot on command prompt. then type
" fixmbr" with no quotes.
this fill fix only the boot sector and your system will work OK.

The windows installer sais that it cant open the package and to verify if the package exists

What are you trying to do?
If you are reinstalling the O/S, put the CD in and reboot the computer. You say it's a Dell--so on startup press the F12 key and boot from the CD.
Unless you boot from the CD, the process won't work.

Need floppy to boot in XP PRO on HD

Hi, if you can boot using xp cd then instead of going into recovery console you can elect to install xp. The cd will search for existing installations and offer to repair for you. If you are able to get this option it will not delete your programs or personal stuff. You will need your xp code and you may need to reactivate windows when finished. If it doesn't offer repair then f3 to exit so you don't overwrite your personal stuff.

Well Bart CD that everyone downloads has some nice utilities on it, some free some not.
You have to be carefull using such utilities as they can cause more harm then good...
You now have to reinstall windows before you can apply sp3. Sp3 is not bootable and bart CD doesn't have windows install of any kind on it... Reinstall windows with your disc then browse to your cd and double click on sp3 to update...
Hope everything works out now....
Please rate this solution if it helps... Thank You...

Reinstall xp

You have to make certain that the system BIOS are set correctly to boot your CD drive first. If you BOOT sequence is set correctly any cd that is bootable should begin to boot first. So try I believe to depress F2 when you boot up your PC for the first time this takes you into the system setup. System BIOS, goto the boot menu and change the settings to make certain that your CD drive is the first to boot. When you reboot your PC make certaint the CD is in the drive before you reboot. In addition you will quickly see a sentence pop up asking you if you would like to begin setup, and if so, depress any key to boot from cd. This should start the process for you!
