Question about Black & Decker AV1200 DustBuster Handheld Vacuum

Open Question

Dust buster won't hold a charge, even if I let power run down to nothing and then charge it for a full day or two. This is the 2nd dust buster that has done the same thing. When I first take the item from the charger, it appears to have a very strong charge. Then within a minute, I cannot pick anything up. Thanks for your help.

DUST BUSTER 7.2 -- POWER LASTS FOR UNDER ONE MINUTE??
Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. The problem that people have with dustbusters is that when they 1st get them they need to say train the dustbusters to extend the battery life, the process is simple – when you 1st buy the dustbuster then you charge it up the 1st time and then you turn it on and drain the battery down to nothing, and then recharge the dustbusters again, and by doing that you have a larger battery life and it will run longer – but dustbuster and vacuums like that do not tell you and when people buy the item they just turn it on for a minute or two and then the battery does not get a “memory” as per how long it should run. By doing this the dustbuster will last and run longer and will have fewer problems. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

Thanks, Don the Vac Man

I am not certain about this specific battery, however, if many batteries are unused for a long period of time, they can not be rejuvenated.
Try the switch in each position for 24 hours and if there is no action, it is probably not worth repairing.

Are the brushes worn down too far? As they wear the springs tension gets weaker. The brushes can also get stuck inside the channel they slide in. Could also be a buildup of dust etc inside and around the internal fan or commutator, etc.

How do I get more batteries for a dust buster?

You have 3 options:
1. You could do a search under the part number of the machine for a parts break out diagram.
2. Open the vacuum, and do a search for the battery when you see the part number on the old battery.
3. Call the manufacturer for assistance.

see this causes and fix it. God bless you
Air filter:
If the vacuum cleaner won't pick up dirt and has no suction the air filter might be clogged. Remove the filter and either clean or replace it as needed.
Exhaust Filter If the vacuum cleaner won't pick up and has no suction the exhaust filter might be clogged. Remove and clean the filter, replace it if its torn or damaged.

Vacuum Hose If the vacuum cleaner won't pick up and has no suction the vacuum hose might be clogged. Remove the hose from the vacuum cleaner, stretch it out straight, shine a bright flashlight in one end and try to see light through it. If no light can be seen, use something to run through the hose and free up the obstruction.
Vacuum Bag If the vacuum cleaner won't pick up and has no suction the vacuum bag might be full. Clean or replace the bag as recommended by the manufacturer.

Dust Cup AssemblyIf the vacuum cleaner won't pick up and has no suction the dust cup assembly might not be installed tightly, or it might be cracked or broken. The dust cup must seal tightly in order to produce the right amount of suction. If it is cracked or broken, replace it. Most glues and adhesives will not successfully seal the crack.
Blower Wheel If the vacuum cleaner won't pick up and there is no suction, the blower wheel might be jammed or broken. Check the blower wheel to be certain it turns freely. If it doesn't, check to see if there is anything rubbing against it. If not, but it's hard to turn, the motor is most likely the problem.

What model number is this. Black and Decker does not make a 16.8 to my knowledge, so a model number would be helpful.

you have got dust in the micro switch and it is not latching on, if you look at this and clean it, that will solve your problem, however blowing the motir has probably wrecked the motor bearings.

Dyson animal not sucking. Have cleaned out all

I had this problem with my DC07 and found the top of the cyclone was stuffed full of compacted dust.

You can (should be able to ) see all way to the top if you look up through the bottom of the center column. If ther's a load of dust up there, you should be able to dislodge a lot with a cane and a good shake.

I actually got to the point where I had nothing to loose, so I actually took the very top plate off the cyclone (3 or 4 Torx screws) and saw a huge plug of dust.

Do please note: Getting the top off and back on again is a **real bugg*r** because of the unlatching mechanism.

Having proved that Dysons **do** clog, I phoned Dyson and got hold of someone technical.

I described as briefly and concisely as I could the problem - top of the cyclone full of dust - and pointed (politely) out that Dyson's advertising stated clearly the machine was supposed never to clog. Ever.

I made no attempt to disguise the fact that my vacuum was out of warranty.

Dyson simply sent me a new cyclone and dust can free of charge!!!

Black and decker handheld vacuum phv1800 type 1 low battery power

Hi I know what you mean! My B&D dust buster used to do this too. The hi power boost means that it can only be used for a limited amount of time. Due to the age of the dust buster though its a sign that the battery is on its way out and regardless of whether or how long its been used or not used, batteries can lose power regardless.
Try to let the dust buster completely lose power and then charge it up for its initial burn in period of 14 hours. Also clean the connection metal strips or hole with a dry cotton bud incase there's any static or dust. Then see if it lasts longer. If the turbo mode or speed 2 is still short, then the battery is dying out.
I don't know where you are but in the UK its hard to get battery replacements for B&D products. You could check your local seller where you are if they have battery replacements but at the cost of current dustbusters it may make more economic sense to consider buying a new dustbuster.
