If you look close at the splines of the shaft you would see 2 of the splines are pinched together at the end of shaft and on the recieving end of shaft you would see that there is a small cutout where the 2 "pinched" splines would line up when slid together.

I have a John Deere 820 tractor. I ran over a brick with mower blade engaged now I can't get blades to re-engage.

You probably have sheared the safety pin in your pulley drive. To change you have to take the pulley off. Try turning the pulley by hand If it turns free you did shear the pin.. Take spark plug wire off before so you do not hurt yourself. Safety first.

How to change cutting blades on john deere Z710A mower?

you should be able to life the deck to its highest possible setting, and get a wrench to remove the blades, you'll need 27" blades. the shaft may have a star pattern as well as the blades. when you replace them, you want to make sure you remember what direction the blades were sitting when you removed them and put them back in the same way, so you dont have blade interference

The left blade on my John Deere LT155 stopped working

Besides the drive belt, there is a timing belt inside the mowing deck. The left blade is run by the timing belt. I imagine the timing belt is broken.

Why isn't the center blade on a john deere LX178

Of course with everything off, reach under the deck and turn the center blade by hand. If:
1. the blade turns by itself and nothing else moves, you need to tighten the retaining bolt more.
2. the blade, retaining bolt and drive shaft turn, check to see if the pulley above it is turning.
a. If the pulley turns freely check that the drive belt is going around it to power the blade.
b. If the blade turns with the drive shaft and the pulley doesn't, check that the pulley is still properly connected to the blade shaft. Some have a key in them that can split, others just have a bolt on top holding them tightly on the shaft.

42 inch jd la115, hit stump in yard, changed blade cause I thought I bent the baldes still cuts uneven. Could the shaft be bent or broken? It appears to be cutting properly on the right side but the left...

try pushing the blade up into the deck,,,if there is any lift in it there is the fault,,the top nut has come off the blabe drive pully and let the drive shaft drop a little this will lower the cutting blade,,,fix it before the blade falls right out

Mower blades froze up

Have you greased the bearings on the mower deck recently? Is there something jamming the blades?

Remove the deck and see if you can move the blades by hand. If you insist on not removing the deck to do this ... make sure the belt that drives the deck is not on the drive shaft of the motor to prevent accidental starting of the motor and instant mangling of your hand. If you can move all the blades, look for a faulty or worn out pulley on the deck. If the blades are frozen in their bearings, get replacement towers at your John Deere dealer or from a FixYa.com advertiser. If one is faulty or rusted ... replace them all ... as they are probably at or near the same condition. Do this job one time and do it correctly.
