Honda IZY rotary mower - drive failure

The mower just stopped being self-propelled this morning, wouldn't engage ''drive'' and I had to push it round. When trying to engage, it could not be pulled backwards either. Had a quick look to see where the cable went inside the lawnmower body but couldn't resolve it myself. Any suggestions please?

SOURCE: Honda Harmony mower, self propelled hydrostatic,

If i remember correctly, under each drive wheel, there is a small gear, and under each gear there is a small metal rod that is what the transmission uses to propel the mower...it sounds like the rods either have dirt on them or they are just stuck and can not move to allow you to pull it backwards

SOURCE: Honda lawn mower, self propelled mechanism not working

check the mechanism first before changing the gearbox its possible that the cable might jump out from the pulley or the cable is worn out or its possible that the gear on the tire is worn out to if not then that would be the time for you to change the gear box it would be hard to change it if you don't have the right tools to work on it if you know how everything work its not that hard to replace it just make sure were everything goes memorize the parts before disassembling cause that would be you guide to reassemble it...goodluck

most self propelled mowers engage an arm to put the gearbox into drive so it may not be a case of loosening the drive belt

Self-propelling action on 917.378771 not working

This type of mower uses a gear box driven by a v-belt. First check the v-belt. Is it in place and does it turn when the drive is engaged. You can also check the drive pinions in the wheels. These can wear out or "chew up" the insides of the drive wheels. I doubt it is the transmission, these are tough little units on this mower.

Why won't my 22 in. Kohler Low Wheel Variable Speed Self-Propelled Gas Lawn Mower self propel anymore?

i would guess that the belt is'nt tight enough when engaged. when you press the drive bar on the handle it should make the belt really tight if not it will need replaced. sometimes the gears in the wheels will mess up. there are videos on you tube that describe that and also the belt.

Honda izy self propelled auto choke, the problem is the auto choke,it takes sometimes about five minutes to switch of,then when i stop the machine and start it again..say after about five minutes choke...

This is controlled by a thermostat next to muffler that is connected to choke. These thermostats often fail. They are not that hard to replace though. I never liked the design of these from the start. Should be easy fix though. Good luck.

Hi Robert,
I'm not usually a Lawn Mower Expert, but I think I may have an answer for you. Assuming your craftsman rotary lawn mower is similar to this self propelled craftsman mower (they should have the same basic parts), this video should help!

If you have the smell of rubber burning the belt isn't gripping. Make sure that there isn't anything stopping the wheels turning like old grass or even a piece of twig. If their clear try adjusting the tension on the drive pully.

Hello i have a Honda izy self propelled it is 3

sounds like your petrol filler cap hole is blocked , try and drill a hole in the cap or loosen the cap slightly , and change the spark plug , the izy can go through plugs regularly, you could try a good wire brushing and set the gap

good luck

Can't push my self propelled lawn mower!

Remove the drive wheels and have a look at the gear teeth in them. If even slightly worn, they need replacing. If you run the mower with the wheels off, that end elevated with a block, see if the axle turns when you engage the drive. If it does, your transmission is fine. Wheels are a lot easier to change than a tranny.
