An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

Beyond Micro BMMDU2 250 GB external hard drive not working

It is highly unlikely that it will work. A circuit board from the same make and model hard drive would be a better choice, but I think a fire damaged hard drive would not work with a functioning circuit board. It depends upon how much heat the hard drive was subject to.
There are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives, but it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services. Depending upon how valuable your data is, I suggest you get a quote first.

Beyond micro mobile disk BMMDU2 is not recognized

The drive USB interface may be damaged; an external case is available form various vendors for about $20. The drive should pop out and into the new case. If still not recognized, then the ID track on the drive may be compromized - that can happen if the USB is unplugged while it is still writing to the drive. There is drive recovery software out there, like EASEUS that works quite well (they have a demo that you can try free) to see if that would work.

Laptop Won't Recognize External HD

You can try opening the device manager in Window XP and uninstall the external hard disk (make sure you show unplugged devices).
Then replug the drive again, and it should reinstall the drivers.

I plag my BMMDU2 in 2 my computer & it does not show up anywhere

The only solution that I have found, due to having same problem, is that original power supply is too low at 1.5 watts. 3 things to try.
1 - purchase another similar external hard drive and use its power supply. (I bought a Maxtor Driive with same plug at 2.0 watts)
2 - purchase power supply from radio shack with higher watts. take drive in with you for tech to match it up.
3 - Remove the Hard Drive from tthe case and connect to a PC as a slave Hard drive.

Any option may or may not work, but worth the try when invaluable data is on your drive.
