Hmmm external hard drive should work without any problem as windows xp allready have inbuilt drivers for mass-storage.

try to Uninstall the USB driver, goto Device manager and Uninstall USB, then reboot to clean system registry and install USB driver from Windows XP setup disck. and try the external-hard drive, xp should recognize your external-hard drive. If not then install driver for your drive if you have and try. for camera and ipos u need to install drivers and supporting softwares from your manufacturers.

thanks
Iqbal

My External Hard Drive is asking me to format. Why is it and i currently have information on my external hard drive.

I guess you are using it thru USB...
This is a general issue with all external devices connected thru USB, many times the USB reacts to an external device as though they dont exist.

The best solution is to shutdown the PC remove the device from the external USB port clean the connection, the USB cable connector, USB port etc and reconnect.

This situation could also happen if you have dropped the device, any little shake/**** could make changes to the internal system of the disk.

Try using a different USB cable to connect it to the PC

My personal experience is..... USB devices should be used sparingly and for things that are not critical like (MP3, mobile, camera etc) I rarely use external harddrive thru USB, never to store critical data.....an issue ever with the disk the data is almost gone unless it's recovered by an hardware expert after opening the drive and thru special system/data recovery devices.
The last option is to format it again, many times my MP3 player has been funny and gave me similar read issue and I had to format it many times to be read again by the PC, so i learnt a leason from that......never to connect a harddisk from USB, it's better to have larger harddisk inside the PC and use some DVD disks to carry your critical data to the place of work....(they cost less also) if they fail just throw them and use a new DVD disk

My dual xdm6350 won't read or charge itouch... It just says reading. Any suggestions?? Thx

ANSWER:
The USB is not going to work with your iPod. It is intended to be used with a flash drive or external hard drive with a folder structure containing either .mp3 or .wma files.

REASON:
The way the USB works on the system is that it reads all the files and folders on the entire device and will say "reading" until it reads all the files and folders. This should only take a few seconds but if there is tons of files it may take longer.
Main problem: An iPod contains much more than just music files and folders - it contains an entire operating system. Worse, the operating system which the iPod uses is protected, keeping other devices except for iTunes from reading the music files.

SOLUTION:
You will need to use a flash drive or external hard drive with your USB. This device can only contain music, and the music must be organized into folders. Your iPod will not work. However, you can use Auxiliary input using a cable which both ends are 1/4" headphone jacks, one end going to the iPod and other plugged into your stereo.

Good Luck!

Have a look at this article on external hard disk troubleshooting. Could be that you need to delete the USB root hub devices in the Device Manager to force Windows to recognize the device.

Hi im sachin want to purchase 1 tb hard disk of cgate and LCD of ither samsung or sony.... 1. will support an external USB hard drive on this lcd's ? 2.is there any other type of hard disk i need to...

I do not know if the 1 Tb external hard will work on the USB ports on the LCD TVs.
What do you want to store on the 1 Tb USB hard drive and display on the LCD TVs?
Most LCD TVs can access USB memory sticks and display DVI movies (if supported by the TV), photos etc. that are stored on these USB memory sticks.
Try inserting an USB hard drive (borrow one if necessary, can be any capacity) into the USB port to see if it works before you decide to purchase a 1 Tb USB hard drive.
My suggestion would be to purchase a 1 Tb USB memory stick. This would out perform an external USB hard drive.

Ipod and External Hard Drive No longer recognized by PC

Depending on your iPod, may have to go see if there is a driver on-line to download and reinstall on your computer. Short of that, you may want to try a DEFRAG, or else try and go back to a RESTORE past RESTORE point and see what happens. Even try Virus Scan and Ad-Aware scan for Bugs that may have infected the file that reads your iPod. Try to think of any software updates you may have made shortly to the iPod not be identified...

External Harddrive Ignorance...

I've seen this happen with hubs being connected to external hard drives before.

Do you have a free usb port on the back of your computer you can plug it into?

That should fix the problem.
