The machine seems to be running fine. But the clothes are coming out, kind of smelling like petrol. I cleaned the tray where you put the products and just did a very hot wash with nothing in it. But I can still smell that smell on the inside of it. What on earth can it be??

Clear your filter. Remove detergent drawer and clean the drawer and its receptacle on the machice. Bung in 8 milton tablets in the drum and put it on the hottest longest wash you can and leave it run normally.
Run a short cold wash to flush the machine
Now put some nice smelling low foaming disinfectant in and repeat the hot wash cycle. This should sort it but may take repeated treatments. Lower the amount of softener and detergent you use as excess can build up and can cause this problem to come back. Additionally dont overload with really dirty cloths and if you do a wash with exceptionally dirty cloths then after you empty your machine put it on a shortest rinse cycle to purge and contaminated water that is left behind.
If all this fails you will need to have your machine serviced.
Is the machine operating properly, or are your clothes getting a musty smell?
The musty smell has a few solutions, One may work but probably a combination of all will work best.
Immediately move wet clothes to the dryer, do not let them sit in the washer for a long time. If your clothes smell, put mouthwash with your clothes directly in the tub during the wash cycle (this will not stain your clothes) leave the door open when not in use (lets it dry out) If the washer smells, use bleach and hot water in an empty cycle once in a while (kills just about every kind of bacteria or mold which may be causing the smell) Use washing machine cleaner once in a while(can be found at your local grocery store isle next to detergent) Dry your clothes completely, damp clothes can start to smell again.
If you are looking for a new washer, try to find a newer model that features a stainless steel tub with silver impregnation. The silver is a natural disinfectant.
A solution from the internet:
Make a boil wash (with no clothes and detergents) put in the powder's drawer a cup of bicarbonate of soda.
It should clean the machine and move out the bad smell.
I have a front loading machine also and am not willing to have to constantly clean out the machine -- the soap and fabric softeners you use are building up between the inner and outer drums (and on the drum itself sometimes). Because the machines door is so tightly sealed (to prevent water leakage) the smell from this buildup is awful. I finally found the solution.
MAGGIE'S SOAP NUTS -- they are all natural (grow on trees) and will remove the grime from your drum and also clean your clothes (you won't even need fabric softener anymore). Stop using commercial detergents and fabric softeners and start using Maggie's Soap Nuts.
They are not very cheap but they work great --
I have found that making a liquid out of the soap nuts and storing it in a bottle works better than putting them in the sack cloth they come with (because front loaders do not agitate constantly like regular machines, the cloth bag sits on the clothes and sometimes leaves a stain -- the liquid will not leave a stain.
YOU WILL SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM AND HAVE SOFTER CLOTHES TO BOOT (without fabric softener so you save some money there). They are also better for septic tanks, the environment and your health!
I believe Whole Foods sells them and they are also on the internet at www.Maggiessoapnuts.com
Note: Also go to www.newstarget.com -- they are going to buy these in bulk to cut the cost in half but don't have them yet. You should be able to buy them there soon.
Note: Forgot to tell you to run some of this thru your machine with hot water before washing your clothing to clean out the buildup that is already in the machine
