Question about IBM Netfinity 5500 M20 4RY (86624RY) Server

Open Question

At bootup, I receive a message about a problem

Running on an ancient ibm Netfinity 5500 - Type 8660-7SU - bios v. 13. At bootup I receive a message about a problem with dimm in J1/slot6 ( as I recall ) and then the boot process stalls at a prompt for the setup password. The known password and all historic passwords do not work. Could this password have gotten reset in the same incident that fried the dimm? Is it possible to reset this password via jumpers or other method?

Turn the computer off.
Remove the RAM from that J1/Slot6 slot.
Reconnect the power and start it.
Do you still get the "problem" message?

Netfinity 5000 bios password unknown - I got a IBM Netfinity 5000 for free from my schoo and they had a BIOS/Admin password set. The school hasn't used these computers for a long time so no one knows...

****. IBM just wants your money. In most cases, the bios password can be disabled by removing the CMOS battery. Remove the CMOS, pull out the power cord, and hold the power button for 10 seconds to drain any residual charge. Boot the computer without the CMOS and it should say password disabled. Turn it off, unplug it, and slap it back together. You should be fine. Let me know how it goes.

Problem woth IBM netfinity 3000

You definitely should be able to boot from cd. I used to have a netfinity 3000 and regularly booted off cd. However, there are 2 possibilities here:
a. your cd-rom is faulty
b. your cd disc is seen not bootable
I would suggest checking whether you can boot from this cd disc on another machine-if so, I would try swappin cdrom in the netfinity.

Good luck,
Raf

Hi

The error message you are receiving "Inquiry command failed Using IBM-PC ServerRaid Host adapter" makes me think you are attaching the tape drive to the ServerRaid Controller, which is only for Hard Disks. There should be a normal SCSI interface for attaching tape drives, etc. It's possible that the ServerRaid card is a PCI (or older) plug in card, and the normal SCSI interface will be on the main motherboard. If you look on the IBM website for the Hardware Maintenance Manual, it should hopefully make things clearer.

The reason you may not be seeing the hard drives in CMOS, is because you will need to use the IBM ServerRaid Utility to view and configure the disks.

Missing support/installation cd

I had the same problem.
There is a cd that came with the server called "IBM RAID Support" that is a must have to reconfigure the hard drives.
It took me a week to find the ISO image.
I will upload the cd via FTP and send you the link.

Running Non-ECC Ram in a IBM Netfinity 3500 M20

Dear NickB,

In my experience working with many servers, Non-ECC memory will not work on a machine that requires ECC memory. It is possible in some servers to disable the ECC mode in the system BIOS to allow non-ECC memory to work, but you will often end up with performence problems later on.
Hope this information helps, let me know if I can be of any further assistance.
