My current data bus speed is 400Mhz I want to upgrade my memory Can memory of speed 533Mhz work. What changes will I have to make?

Please do check on your manual if the motherboard can support the 533mhz. if your motherboard can support a higher capacity of memory then maybe it can support the 533mhz.

System reguirements to inrease ram memory


Ram Memory typically operates at half of the frequency rate, ('Speed'), that the Processor's -> FSB does.

Your motherboard supports Processors that have either a 400MegaHertz Front Side Bus, (400MHz FSB), or 533MHz FSB, or 800MHz FSB.

(Northwood Core for 400MHz FSB. The rest is in the other solution I provided)

Processor has a 400MHz FSB?
You can use DDR Sdram ram memory that is 266MHz.
(PC2100)

Processor has a 533MHz FSB?
You can use DDR Sdram ram memory that is either 266MHz, Or 333MHz.
(PC2100 and PC2700 respectively)

Processor has an 800MHz FSB?
You can use DDR Sdram that is either 266MHz, or 333Mhz, or 400Mhz.
(PC2100, PC2700, and PC3200, respectively)

NOTE*
When using a processor that has an 800MHz FSB, and using PC2700, (DDR at 333MHz), the PC2700 ram memory will run at ->
320MHz.

JEDEC has set the voltage requirements for DDR Sdram at 2.5 Volts.
'Performance' ram memory that is DDR Sdram may use higher voltages.
Not recommended unless you know how to overclock.

Although the motherboard, and the ram memory module may have SPD, it doesn't always work,

A lot of times you are faced with going into BIOS Setup, and changing the ram memory voltage, IF BIOS Setup has this feature.
This is why I say overclocking experience helps tremendously.

You want Low Density, Unbuffered, Non-ECC, and a CL of 2.5 for PC2700, and a CL of 3.0, (3) for PC3200.

You know 'Upgradation' is not a word, right? lol!

How about Upgrade ability?

The Intel D101GGC motherboard has a Front Side Bus MAXIMUM frequency rate of 800MegaHertz. (FSB max rate is 800MHz)

Therefore, it depends on the PROCESSOR that is being used, as to what frequency rate of Ram Memory that can be used.

[ Excuse me. Frequency Rate = 'Speed'. The layman's term ]

Ram Memory typically operates at HALF of the frequency rate, of the FRONT SIDE BUS for the Processor.

Have a Processor that has a maximum FSB frequency rate of 800MHz?
You can use Ram Memory that operates at a frequency rate of 400MHz, or 333MHz. (Do recommend using PC3200, however)

Have a Processor that has a Maximum frequency rate of 533MHz?
You can use DDR Sdram at 333MHz. (PC2700)

The Intel D101GGC uses DDR Sdram ram memory.
DDR Sdram at 333MegaHertz = PC2700
DDR Sdram at 400MHz = PC3200

There are TWO ram memory expansion slots.
The MAXIMUM for EACH ram memory slot is 1GigaByte. (1GB)
The Maximum TOTAL Amount for the motherboard is 2GB.

ALWAYS make SURE you have a ram memory module ('Stick'), in Slot 1 (DIMM 1)
A Processor reads Slot 1 first. If there is no ram memory in Slot 1, the computer will not work.

How to know what the FSB is of the processor, you have currently installed?
I suggest using the free CPU-Z,

There are tabs across the top that you click on, to get other information. (Caches, Mainboard, Memory, SPD, Graphics, About)

Let's look at the Processor example shown.

1) Name: Intel Core i7 860
It is an Intel Core i7 processor, and the model number is 860,

Based on the Lynnfield technology, and the 45nm architecture.

5) Core Voltage: 1.216 V
Looking at the Wikipedia link, you can see this processor's voltage range is 0.65 to 1.4 Volts.
Or stated as 0.650 to 1.400 Volts. It is -> DC Voltage.

The 1.216 Voltage stated, is what that Processor is using now.
It is real time information.

6) Specification: Intel (Registered trademark) Core (TradeMark) i7 CPU.

CPU stands for Central Processing Unit. Another term used is Microprocessor, or simply -> Processor, for short.

8) 860 = Intel Model Number
@2.80GHz stands for 2.80GigaHertz. The MAXIMUM frequency rate that the processor is designed to operate at.

9) Family, Model, Stepping, Ext.Family, Ext.Model, and Revision, are Intel technology factors, for this processor.
What Family of Processors it was developed from, what Model design, what stepping it uses, what Revision of design, and etc.

11) Forget about the Cache column. What you are concerned with is under the Clocks (Core#0) subheading.

I just stated the above, so you might have a better understanding, of what you are looking at.

12) Core Speed:
Again with the 'Speed'. It is Frequency Rate.
This is the maximum 'speed' that the Processor will operate at.
(Maximum frequency rate)

When you have CPU-Z going, you can watch this frequency rate, change. It is showing Real Time information. AS IT HAPPENS.

13) Multiplier: The multiplier times the internal clock 'speed', of the Processor.

Forget about the information shown. It is for an Intel Core i7 processor, and this processor operates on a much different technology, than the Intel processor in your computer.

What you are concerned with is shown in the box, to the right of -
Bus Speed.

A) If you have a Processor with a 533MHz FSB, the number shown will be 133.2
Why?
Because Intel processors are 'Quad Pumped'
133.2 times 4 = 532.8
This is rounded up to 533, or 533MHz.

If you have an Intel processor with a Front Side Bus of 800MHz, the number in the box will be 200.6
200MHz (Rounded down)

Processor with an 800MHz FSB? Use PC3200.
(DDR Sdram at 400MHz)

Processor with a 533MHz FSB? Use PC2700.
(DDR Sdram at 333MHz)

You can also just post what you see on CPU-Z, and I will tell you what you are looking at.

Clicking on the Caches tab, gives you information on the Processor cache.

Clicking on the Mainboard tab tells you about your Motherboard.

Clicking on the Memory tab, gives you basic information on your Ram Memory.

Clicking on the SPD tab, gives you detailed information about your Ram Memory, AND each ram memory module.

Clicking on the Graphics tab, gives you information on your graphics chipset. Integrated on the motherboard, or on a graphics card.

Clicking on the About tab, gives you information about CPU-Z.

It May work but the bus speed is going to stay the same if it is max clcoked at 400 MHZ thats it no faster unless your computer can be jumpered to a higher speed but most you are limited by the clcok speed of the buss.

You checked in the right place as far as looking in the BIOS, however, memory and CPU sockets do not necessarily have the same buss speed. My FSB runs at 1066Mhz and my RAM at 800Mhz, it all depends on what type of RAM you buy as to the bus speed. You can up the bus speed on your RAM if you wish to reduce bottle-necking, but I've only done that a few times. In order to adjust anything, you must set the settings to manual. Be careful when you change this stuff around though, voltages must also be adjusted accordingly.

Teresa, if you changed the front side bus to 533, your memory must have the same clock speed. Memory clock speeds are what is known as "backwards compatible" but not forwards. This means that you could put a piece of memory of a clock speed of 400mhz into a system that runs at 333mhz and it will "downclock" the memory, but you could not put a piece of 333mhz memory in a 400mhz fsb pc and expect it to run. one of two things will happen, the system will not boot at all or the syetm will downclock the processor to a slower speed. In your case your cpu must be 533mhz clock speed with pc4200/533mhz memory to function correctly.

Hi Have a Dell Dimension 8200 trying to increase memory Original is 2x128 plus 2xcontinuity Purchased 2x256 and installed but computer will not work.Is it the case that I can only install another 2x128...


On a Dell Dimension 8200 there were 2 available bus speeds, 400mhz and 533mhz. The bus speed determines the required RAM speed. Most common 8200's have a 400mhz fsb and require a RAM speed of 45ns or faster (Lower number = faster). Some 8200's have a 533mhz fsb and require a RAM speed of 40ns or faster. The RAM modules must be installed in matched pairs, but the 2 pairs do not have to be equal to each other. (I have 8200 with 2x512mb and 2x64mb - you can also mix ECC and NON-ECC pairs but it will disable ECC) Check the last 2 numbers on your original RAM that works in your system, they will be either 40 or 45. If they are 40 - and 45's won't work, you have a 533mhz fsb. If this is the case, buying the same RAM in a 40ns speed will solve your problem...... Hate to be the one to break it to you, but if you do need 40ns (Rambus) RAM, it is very expensive - about 4 times the price and 1/10th as common as 45ns RAM. Some good deals can be found on ebay - search: rambus 40ns.

Memory module


Your motherboard supports 533MHz memory modules, no more. If you put anything higher in, it will work, but only at the speed of 533MHz, so there's not much point in aiming any higher. Just make sure what you're buying is a DDR2 533MHz memory module, and it's best to get them in increments of 2. If you have 4 slots on your motherboard, get another 2x512MB modules of RAM. If you're running Windows Vista, it might be worth considering 2x1GB modules. I think that pretty much covers your question, if you have anything else to ask, feel free to reply.
